The first 3 maps are a gameplay loop to build up keys for the big extraction event on the final map. You can't get the keys from random drops, they come from PVE events like Lockdown on Dire Marsh where you need to stop the event 3x across the map. You can probably get keys from the Warden boss...

All of these icons are easily distinguished in Marathon after a short time. I can recognize them all at a glance. Smart heal is one button press for almost all consumables, auto switches to poison/hacking cures etc. whenever you need it. Equipment like grenades are clearly marked in your UI...

The game does take about 10 hours or so to really click and build some gear, but no one with any gaming experience should be confused by the UI for more than 10 minutes. The majority of what you interact with is a simple color coordinated grid just like Arc.

You get permanent stat upgrades by purchasing unlocks at different factions once you rank them up. Yes, shells have specific loot (cores) that change aspects of their gameplay. Probably only found in higher level maps / key card rooms.

I don't know about the FOMO aspect. Unlike other gachas, the limited characters in this game stick around for three banners before they rotate out. In other games if you don't get them when they are featured, you're fucked for like a year. The 120-pull system with no 50/50 guarantee still sucks...

Nioh is just a hack n slash ARPG. It's not even a Soulslike. We had hard action games before Demons Souls came out, shit like Ninja Gaiden Black is a very obvious predecessor to Nioh. Not saying it isn't a GOAT franchise, but it is not its own genre.
