I think after they made Bound in 1996, the (at the time) Whachovski Brothers just wanted to make a "neo-noir" dystopian sci-fi flick with John Woo gunfights. I don't really think they were planning anything out of it, and when Matrix hit the jackpot well, unless you're a tibetan monk of course...

I think he got too much sidetracked with side projects like Millenium, The Lone Gunmen and Harsh Realm. While both TLG and HR were unremarkable, Millenium was very interesting and I get that late 90' TV wasn't the time you would say no to anything if you were him, but maybe he should have...

What made the books interesting was engaging character development and plausible sience stuff. The show downgrades it with mediocre writing and questionable casting. Which both turns the science stuff from plausible to '"hey Jarvis invent time travel". It's sad because the whole Fermi Paradox...

This game would have been good being released before Skyrim; if you want better story, gameplay and combat it's already been made.
