They actually mentioned the shitting scene in the "making of" thing at the end. They started off by saying "we hope you will forgive us" and then said they were trying to show how low and non-regal he really was despite his gear and dubious title. I guess it does that but it's also super gross.

I think it's just that he runs out of gas on the characters after the original story. Most of his shows the first season is pretty good but after the initial conflict is resolved, the characters don't develop and the clichés are harder to ignore because you see them over and over. In a movie...
