This Friday October 21st at 5pm PST Devnoob and Image are reopening their eqpvp server for season 2 of 2016. It's going to be old world zones only (except nexus/bazaar) and team based with 2 teams. Server has leaderboards, serverwide pvp death announcements, pvp points earned to spend on rare items at pvp vendors, and xp is about 5x p99red's xp rate. There will be level locks that are upped generally every 10-15 days. I believe the first level lock is set at level 20.

Specifications:
- 2 box limit
- players start in their home town (by race).
- No kunark/velious, lvl 50 max. Old world only and expand off it.
- PVE respawn naked (must retrieve corpse to recover items).
- Corpse on corpse keeper after 1 hour (check bazaar or cities).
- Nexus provides as neutral hub to quick access of old world.
- Soulstone available to return to nexus
- Custom zones integrated into old world (west ro, miraguls chamber), pinnacle cave available via nexus near caved in entrance.

PVP Behavior:
- Player forced to pick team at lvl 5 (or cannot move further)
- PVP 4 lvl range, unless you have excess infamy due to training, then any level above you can attack (or be attacked).
- 2 teams (erudin = home city for good, felwithe = home city for evil)
- 3 encampments exist that are takeable (tox, greater faydark, lavastorm).
- able to loot cash, PVP points (group points supported also), pvp coins (given to group, lvl 20+ target), pvp ears (on corpse, lvl 40+)
- PVP respawn with items in nexus (minus 1 random inventory item drop, PVP LOOTABLE, DOES NOT INCLUDE EQUIPPED ITEMS).
* health cut in half
* mana set to 0
- PVP lockout of zone for 10 minutes against last zone you died in.

Oh fuck. This was about the only thing that could bring out of retirement

Edit:

For those who don't know, these guys did the old guildwars servers. Here's the deal with their servers-

Good-

Devnoob is the DB guy and his stuff is solid. Image is the programmer/server dev etc. He is very talented and created some amazing shit back in the day.

The guildwars servers were by far the most fun I have had playing EQ-- that includes live. They were an absolute blast. Your guild could take over cities (Neriak, Rivervale, etc) from NPCs and you could buy and place guards of various levels/abilities. Other guilds had to try and take your cities from you. Each city and outpost your guild possessed gave your guild a certain amount of money per hour (or something) and a permanent decent buff. For example, if your guild had possession of Neriak, everyone in your guild always had the Regeneration buff in effect on your character, and your guild bank got 100p per hour you held Neriak. You used the plat to buy guards etc.

Killing players from other guilds also gave pvp points. The points were scaled based on level and how often the victim had been killed. The best items in game came from spending pvp points at pvp item vendors.

Surprisingly, experience, rewards, etc. were really well tuned. Nothing seemed OP or too weak. The balance on the server was amazingly good. Image (as a GM) seemed pretty fair too.

Bad-

As much fun as these servers were, they never ended well. Devnoob used to be (probably still is) one of these dudes who gets really sensitive about criticism. He would usually get into an argument with someone on the server message board, get pissed off, throw a temper tantrum, and pull his database-- essentially doing the equivalent of "I'm going to take my ball and go home so none of you fuckers can play." Guildwars servers ended twice like this.

The most recent GW server I can remember ended pretty shortly after launch. The hype level was high and Image took a bunch of donations, then suddenly disappeared and the server went poof. No idea what the reasons were, and frankly I don't care-- it was fucked up regardless.

So, anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there for those who didn't know. I can't tell you how fun the servers are, so I will be giving it a go-- but don't donate a ton of money, and don't expect the server to be around for too long. Caveat emptor

Ausc and I have played eqpvp previously. 2014 maybe. Devnoob knows his stuff and has one stable server. Not enough people for pvp action usually, but when it went down suddenly the server started to populate and quite a few would get involved. Good stuff if PvP is your thing.

Server had like 150 people when i checked earlier. No time to play here currently, but not a bad start pop wise

Just wanted to rebump this. Been playing here super casually and its a fun server. Community is pretty good for an EQ pvp server and the custom content that I have experience so far is solid. Level 55 cap and Velious just dropped so things are a bit unbalanced right now, but the population is pretty strong.

If you're like me and like to spend shitty snowy days collecting pixels give it a shot.

Unless they make some custom class tweaks, PVP in EQ is just unbalanced as fuck towards certain classes. Others classes are nearly useless.

I speak from R99 experience.

EQPvP balance is very different from r99, melee hit much harder and resists are custom. Out of era gear and spells are peppered in. If you farm enough of the custom PvP gear and you can turn any class into borderline godmode.

Yup! Balance here is a lot closer to even than say R99 is. Not perfect of course, but its good and the devs are attentive

This sounds amazing. Were classes revamped?

Nope. At least in the first few GW versions they left class mechanics alone. The main changes were allowing player guilds to take and own cities and camps and how pvp points worked. PVP points scaled based on 1. your level, 2. level of your opponent, 3. how recently you killed the target, 4. how any pvp points your target had. You could also split pvp points with your group, so if your group made a kill everyone would get exp.

Like I said, it was well thought out and impressively coded. The design did a great job at preventing exploitation (you couldn't just kill the same target over and over in a short time and keep getting pvp points). Even great coders sometimes struggle with balance, so the fact that it was well-balanced was impressive as the coding to me.

I gotta say, it was really cool when your guild could own a city like Neriak and place guards where you wanted. The higher level the guard, the more expensive. You could even strategically pick guards of different classes so they would work in concert.

In addition to cities, you could also take camps. For example, the ranger camp in Lfay and the guard tower in NK were both ownable locations. Camps didn't give your guild static buff bonuses like cities, and they didn't give as much money every hour, but they were still worth having. For whatever reason, the Lfay ranger camp was always one of the hottest contested properties on the server.

Arden Arden the thing that saddens me about these stories is thinking that I bet it came out during a time when I had fuck all to do.
Seriously. If it came out from 2004 to 2009, it would have been my life.

So this server is more or less inactive atm as season 2 winds down. Season 3 start in, I think, April. Season 3 will be FFA and I guess is going to have placable camps. Not sure how exactly this works, but from my understanding you will be able to plop down a camp more or less anywhere with guards, porters etc.

Would have to check their site for details but it sounds cool and the portion of season 2 I got to participate in was pretty fun. Definately a unique server

Season 4 starts today at 5pm PST. 20 max level for now. Not sure how much I can play this season but the changes look pretty good. Beastlord and berserker are being added as well.

Always good times when a new season drops.
