Fake. There is no US jurisdiction where booby traps are lawful as they are categorically unconstitutional (Katko v. Briney). If there had been a warning sign, such as by the tire strips at car rental places which warn of "severe tire damage", then it would not be a booby trap and thus not illegal.

Covertly trapping your own property is a crime, even though someone would have to trespass to trip the trap.

Well, the problem with the Snopes "repudiation" of the claim is that they didn't say it was false as much as they said it was unverifiable. When told by a historian writing about him. What it should say is "We can't prove he did or didn't, and only this one guy says he said it".

And so people know I understand the proper society works and I'm not a damn savage, a pic.....

If someone didn't say something, verifiably, then it's not a quote and attributing it as such is false. He might well have said it; but no one was willing to standing up and saying "I heard him say xyz". It's just rumor, not fact. If they had done, then it would be verified. Attributing it to him without mentioning that it's only an unsubstantiated allegation is misleading to the reader.
