Seems like an appropriate reaction to that statement.

When I've got a hunch..

Really though, there were concrete factors that went into this spidey-sense.

1) Dredd 3D. 3D sucks. Anything 3D marketed is immediately suspect as being created for the purpose of 3D. Its one thing to market the movie as 3D, its another to put 3D in the title. People who like good movies shy away from 3D. This being used as a selling point shot it in the foot, casuals stopped caring before their interest was piqued. Oh 3D gimmick, won't be following up on this piece of shit. Major league cringe.

2) No casting hype. Its a "big" remake of a sci-fi flick that many people enjoyed and tooled around with in their younger years in high school and such. "I am the law!!" Where was the casting hype? They were remaking a "Stallone classic" and nobody had even heard the movie was in pre-production outside of insiders. Double cringe.

3) Where was the hype in general?

4) Queer trailer TV spots. The trailer did not get people pumped about the movie. I understand people like the direction Dredd 3D went, and the trailer was an indicator of what to expect as far as tone, but it did nothing to get word of mouth going about the Judge Dredd remake. How about at least bait-and-switch? Make people think its a super serious dystopian sci-fi....wait, then they'd have to get Tom Cruise. Fuck it.

5) Word of mouth. Yet another aggregate factor. No word of mouth, no discussion outside of the super-nerd forums, and barely any discussion there. I heard about the Point Break remake and I barely paid attention to any media, Point Break being remade was HYPED. What gives?

6) Add them all up, and you get that this can't be good feeling. The studio fucked up the rollout of this movie, and fucked up the marketing beyond repair.

You didn't need to be Jimmy Iovine to sense a potential problem on this one.

You've pretty much summarized what everyone here has been saying for years, so I don't think you'll get much argument about that. Wizardhawk's issue was more with a specific line of yours I believe. Which did come across sort of weird. But yeah, Dredd was criminally under-promoted.

I will say, however, that the 3D was fucking awesome, and if you never got the chance to see it in the theater with 3D, you missed out. I say that being a vehement opponent of 3D too.

Noted. And I wasn't trying to steal the thread thunder by editorializing stuff that was already said or anything like that. I was just taking his observation as literal and attempting to give some probable cause for the 6th sense.

Lets be cerial though, with a name like zomebiewizardhawk, shouldn't he be more understanding of perceived weirdness! Cmon now.

I only know what meth does to a brain because of internet memes, so I can't really say what he's capable of understanding.

Nah, he's our meth head, dammit! We still love him. And he shares my love of Taco Bell, so I could never be mad.

The 3D in Dredd is probably still the best 3D I've seen to date in a theater. Which is a bit infuriating.

Actually, LEGO Batman had pretty good 3D but it's also LEGO Batman so I can't tell how much that mattered.

I saw it the first night in 3D IMAX. It was the best 3D experience I've ever had.

I'd toke some SLO MO.

I never saw a trailer or even would have heard of the movie if it weren't for the forums.

Same. The only "marketing" I recall was reading some article about how Urban was apparently never going to take the helmet off and I thought, "cool." Then it bombed in theaters. Would've never seen it if not for this forum either.

I was working in a cinema when Dredd 3D came out and I barely knew it was happening. It didn't help that it was released around a time period when people were getting pissed off about movies being released in 3D only (I remember the distributors wouldn't even let us book a 2D version of this in addition to the 3D shows) and a spate of terrible 3D conversions prior to the release didn't help it's cause.

Same here. I happened on the thread one day, noticed it was on Netflix and watched it some time later. Glad I did cos it is still the best no fluff, no frills action movie I've seen in a good while. Fury Road's the only movie that compares but Dredd is tighter, more compact. Dry. I fuckin' love it.

Just read that. No word on where it will air, I guess they'll do a distribution deal later. Oh man, could be cool. The people behind it were also involved in Dredd, apparently.

I hope it is Syfy. I would definitely be down for a Dredd series on TV as there appears to be much much much much more than a dude screaming I AM THE LAW all the time to that universe/city.

I wonder if Karl Urban would be up for it. He's done TV before with Almost Human, and loves the character.

I'd be concerned about a Syfy series for Dredd because they'd be limited in just how 'hard-R' they can go. Maybe Netflix could do it well, but they've already got so goddamn many properties they're trying to force on me that it could be lost in the shuffle.
