Been watching this one for a while to see how it goes. Anyone playing it?

I jest a little about it being Valheim-like because it looks like it is Viking survival and that is about where it ends. It seems to be more survival-ish and village defense as a core loop. Valheim was already pretty solid at release. This has been getting some complaints about balance, jank, and performance. So, true EA. However, they have been releasing regular updates, unlike Valheim, which has moved pretty slowly since initial release.

Mainly curious whether anyone has tried it. Currently on sale for $17.49 so it may be a good point to jump in and hope for the best. I am weary of EA bullshit though.

I've...started it, but I've barely gotten anywhere. Just making a campfire and shelter was a real chore. I want to play it some more since it felt a little Valheim-ish with the atmosphere, but the resource gathering takes more effort.

Trees give you wood, but its multiple types of wood ingredients, and those can get broken down into other materials. And your inventory of some of those initial items fill up your sub inventory quick. Its annoying.

Good thread to make. I've wondered the same thing.

The timing is a bit weird. Not sure if there will be a better deal for the Winter Sale, or if this falls under the rules for how sales are determined? (I could have sworn that you can only do 1 sale within a certain amount of time). I want to hold off for Christmas but not sure if that's a wise move.

I'm kind of surprised that none of my friends have this yet. Even the friends that usually buy & try every game like this.

The limit of 4 players is unusual, too?

I definitely posted about this before. might have been nextfest thread, or indie.

Was very impressed and enthralled with the demo. I'm not playing actively EA.

it borrows very heavily from valhiem, but adds settlement building. (it has automation. you set villagers up to harvest trees for you after the start.)
under 20 bucks, I would def recommend.

soul mask is also a very good Conan clone with even more robust settlement/npc building.

Buddy of mine (who buys almost every survival game out there) who I play these games with and I got this at EA release.

We lasted one night - around 5ish hours. There was way too much jank and annoyance with how you interacted with "villagers", how you constantly ran dry on resources(especially food), etc. It just became something that wasn't fun at all.

Once it goes into full release we might try again, but we both left the game bummed we couldn't refund.

Soulmask was a lot of fun. Cool visuals and audio. I got a little bogged down with the tediousness of villager management but I think they probably have made some improvements to that? Also, it ran like butter.

Hopefully something they will work out, although I am constantly surprised by how some games don't get balance/progression issues resolved. Speaking of progression, what is it in this game? Are their dungeons? bosses?

That's another thing we hated.

WTF is the point to all this? Most of these games have a clear, "do A to obtain B". But this game we were left wondering.."uhhh.. WTF is the point?".

Their 2024 roadmap kind of reads like Kickstarter stretch goals, LOL. No idea why it struck me like that; maybe I'm not being far.

And the update yesterday did add Dedicated Servers, and a number of other improvements besides.
