Thank you and that's a pity. The cleverly crafted previews made it at least seem mildly interesting/HBO bait as, from the previews, the incarnations seemed less literal than figurative.

COLLATERAL BEAUTY Review: A Cruel Movie That Thinks It’s Cute

Trailers sold Collateral Beauty as a movie in which a grieving father is confronted by the personifications of Death, Time and Love to help put him on a path toward healing. That’s not what the movie does. Instead, Collateral Beauty is a movie where three shareholders in an advertising company conspire to make Will Smith’s character look crazy in the eyes of fellow board members so they can wrestle the company away from him during his time of struggle.

They do this by hiring a private investigator to illegally steal the guy’s mail, after which they discover he wrote one (just one!) letter to the ideas of Death, Time and Love each. They use this info to come up with a plan where actors confront him as personifications of these ideas, all of which is recorded by the PI. The actors are then digitally removed from the footage so it looks like Will Smith is talking to himself.

‘Collateral Beauty’ Review: The Ugliest Movie of 2016

When he’s not busy being deceived by people who supposedly care about him, Howard lurks outside a support group for parents who have lost their children. There he meets Madeleine (Naomie Harris), who lost her daughter Olivia to cancer. Slowly unraveling as his friends fuck with his sense of sanity, Howard tries to forge a connection with Madeleine while coming to grips with the loss of his daughter.

And it doesn’t even have the courage to follow through on its bullshit premise! So at the end of the film, Howard and Madeleine (who it turns out is Howard’s ex-wife in a twist so laughable and unnecessary I gasped at the people around me who were gasping) are walking through the park, and Howard turns around and sees the three actors (he never learns that they’re actors because his friends never come clean with him) standing on a bridge. Madeleine turns to look but doesn’t see anyone there. So, Collateral Beauty limply suggests the actors weren’t actors at all but truly the three abstractions who have come to help Howard and his co-workers.

When I saw this trailer before Doctor Strange, I was interested. My wife wanted to see it and we were both a little choked up in the theater watching the trailer. When we got home, I told her my prediction that the black gal was the 'ghost' of his daughter looking like she would have if she never died and that would have been the twist at the end that heals him. I would have rather watched my version. Glad we won't be wasting time on this one.
