30 years?!? Fuck I feel old.

Also using that 'What's in the box?' line with normies / millenials can get some funny results if the other person doesn't know the reference.

I watched this on Imax over the weekend with my new GF who had never seen it before and she loved it (or at least she said she did, ). It's been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it 30 years ago. It blew my fucking mind that the bad guy actually won; I had no idea that was even a thing in movies. Great villains make great movies and Kevin Spacey knocked it out of the park with his acting.

The original script by Andrew Kevin Walker had a more abrupt ending where Detective Mills (Brad Pitt) shoots John Doe (Kevin Spacey) after finding out what was in the box. The script ended with the screen cutting to black right after the gunshot.

The film underwent two test screenings, which showed around 70% positive reactions. However, a significant portion of the audience had negative reactions to the dark and unsettling ending, leading the studio to worry about the film's reception. Concerned about the response, the studio wanted to make changes. At one point, they even suggested replacing Tracy’s head with Mills' dog's head in the box! The producers also proposed that Mills should not shoot John Doe if they went with the dog’s head idea. They even suggested that Somerset, rather than Mills, should be the one to kill John Doe, if Pitt and Fincher insisted on the original ending. Brad Pitt and David Fincher were completely against these ideas.

Brad Pitt had an extra reason to fight for the original ending, as he had a bad experience on a previous movie, Legends of the Fall. During that production, major changes were made to the script without his approval, leaving him frustrated. To avoid a repeat of that, Pitt negotiated to have the “head in the box” ending written into his contract for Se7en. He also made sure that it was specifically stated that Mills would kill John Doe at the end of the film.

When the studio executives pushed for changes, Pitt even threatened to leave the film if they altered the ending. His contractual protections ultimately gave him the leverage to keep the original vision intact.

Eventually, the filmmakers decided to keep the original ending, slightly extending it with aerial shots of the helicopter pilot calling for backup, and added a final scene where Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) quotes Ernest Hemingway: 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. I agree with the second part.'"

It is a great film. I also like how they kept it's location a mystery or a fictional city. Did people claim it was Portland?

In terms of the narrative I kinda prefer the scrubbed ending but as it stands the theatrical ending is part of why it's so memorable. Excluding horror stinger/jumpscare endings just setting up a sequel the villain so rarely wins and even more rarely wins through everyone losing. It's like a secret Joker story.

I've mostly forgotten the plot of this movie. I do recall it being good but not exactly what it's about.
I do remember shouting 'if you don't shoot him you are a faggot' at the TV (rented it and/or watched it on HBO).
I'm um 'renting' it right now.

The one dude fucks a whore to death with a knife covered cock sheath. It was one of the deadly sins. That, a fat dude cutting his love handles off, and "What's in the box?!?!" are all that I remember about this movie. I haven't seen since a VHS rental.

This movie is seriously fucked-up.

The Nine Inch Nails intro credits theme is really good, right up there with Fight Club's intro credits music as far as my most-liked movie openings go.
