I wish I could jump on the the $30 TMO plan, but unfortunately their coverage is ass in upstate NY. I'd be on 2G most of the time. Paying straight talk $45 a month still beats the hell out of what I was paying sprint before i bought my N4.

As far as the N5 goes, I'll wait until next year and hope for a sale like the one for the N4. The N5 would be a nice upgrade, but not a big enough one to justify the cost. There's no 4G service where I live and I don't care about the camera, though the better battery life and more storage would be nice.

Shame guess I'll do wave 2 can't justify spending $1200 on electronics in one month when I try to stick to a $250 monthly budget for gadgets.

What province are you and what carrier are you with now? I'm on Rogers and I just snapped up a Nexus 5 today, I'm planning to switch to Wind, AFAIK the big 3 don't even offer unlimited plans at any price.
Alberta, Telus. I'd love to give you a link to the plan, but Telus' website is so fucked up and convoluted I can't even find the fucking thing. Small Business Shareplus 85 or some shit.

This seems to be a page for it:Small Business SharePlus

Yeah, I know that, but let's say you don't think to look up the map until sometime into your trip?
Yeah, I dunno, this GPS thing seems to be a real sticking point with you. If a working GPS is reallyTHATimportant for you, I would take the money I saved on my cell phone plan and buy a Garmin or something. Would take 2-3 months to pay it off with the money you saved and it will have better gps 'coverage' than all the cell carriers combined.

For GPS, I'd recommend buying the Sygic app. Costs $20, if I recall correctly, for the US maps and works like a charm. You can select which states to download, so it won't fill up your phone with maps you don't need, and search works even when you don't have internet access. It comes with lane assist (so you'll see which lane you should be in on highways) and also displays the speed limit wherever you are. I've found both to be extremely accurate. However, if you want it to integrate traffic, you have to pay for a subscription, which I don't. So the forecast for how long a drive is going to take is going to be off especially within cities, where I still prefer Google Maps. But for longer trips, I switch to Sygic.

Do you have access to wifi when you make those calls? If so you might want to look into the tmobile Walmart prepay plan for like 30 bucks a month.

I think calls made over wifi still count against your minutes. Unless you're thinking of something like using Skype? I actually got the $60/year Skype Premium subscription, which gives me unlimited free calls to Switzerland -- and that also doesn't count against my minutes. You could get, cheaper I'd imagine, unlimited free calling to the US and just make calls with that. But I'm not sure I'd use this as my primary number... it works alright when not on wifi, but not 100%. That is, sometimes there is some lag or stuttering.

Fair enough. I realize I'm overemphasizing the point, but I think I have a good reason for it. Driving to my brother's wedding, we're about 30 minutes north of Rutland. Car breaks down and ALL the lights on the dashboard light up. Apparently the engine decided it was a good time to literally eat its own timing belt. The thing was so shredded that a fine black (rubber)powder was being pushed out of the engine casing when we popped the hood. No cell service at all. Had a kind person not stopped 5 minutes later and towed us into Rutland, I'm not sure what I would have done. Would have been a long walk for sure.

You're probably right that a standalone GPS might be better, but I already have a smartphone and the engineer in me hates redundancy.

If you port your number over to Google Voice you can get it all set up so you can do free WiFi calling w/o using your minutes and can have your calls automatically forwarded to whatever dummy cell number you get from TMO when you don't have an internet connection. It takes a bit of work to set up but if you do it right it works pretty flawlessly. Even sounds great. If you need more details XDA will be much more helpful than I

Good question on the Slickdeals comments that I didn't see anyone answer though...does an aftermarket case interfere with the wireless charging?

Nice Daez, mine is still 'pending' and probably will be for a while. They are quoting weeks but hopefully that's just pessimism on their part.

I've got a rubber case on my Nexus 4, a couple mm thick, and it charges fine on my Qi charger. It would have to be a pretty thick case to interfere with charging I think.

16s and 32s "in stock" now it looks.

And something I just noticed, I don't know if its laziness/oversight or if the earlier rumors were wrong - but going from 16-32 MB does NOT CHANGE THE BATTERY LISTED.

As someone who only planned to get the 32GB because of battery improvement, I'd love to see a confirmation from somewhere about the battery that the 32 MB will use... when I eventually purchase it in a few months. (Contract runs til March and I'm so loathe to break contracts)
