Just read Dave Eggers' book and didn't learn about the movie till recently. Hope it lives up to the Brave New World meets Person of Interest angle.

Read the book. He's kind of a clumsy writer. He fat fingers the fuck out of the execution but still manages to push some really interesting concept buttons in the process. This is probably only the second time I've ever said this, but this may make a better movie than book. I'll probably go see this.

The story touches on some really interesting ground by taking a thinly-veiled Google/Facebook company and extrapolating in a surprisingly believable direction. As ham-fisted as the dude's delivery is, at no point did I feel like he was describing a scenario couldn't easily come to pass if things keep moving in the direction they are headed. The results are pretty chilling, and driven home by the feeling of verisimilitude you get from the story.

Based on the trailer, this movie "feels" like a full length cinematic version of an episode of Black Mirror. I may be wrong, but that's the impression that I get. I'll watch it.

Yeah the book got into some surprising implications of augmented reality and crowdsourced surveillance. I didn't mind the writing, all these new NYT reviewer-friendly contemporary fiction fags sound like that now.

I read this on a flight from Hong Kong and kept thinking the Chinese "Social Credit Score" thing that the communist party is doing with Alibaba is actually waaay ahead on this. They've got the crowdsourced social media gamification starting already.

that looks horribly miscast, hermione's facial expression is just "i really need to take a shit" in the entire trailer and who the fuck really believes Tom Hanks as evil Mark Zuckerberg. evil MarkZ would be younger, have grown up not giving a shit about privacy at all, and probably be chinese

Tom Hanks can't play a villain.

*Edit* I don't mean he lacks the acting ability. He's just too damn ingrained in my mind as the perennial, lovable good guy. I'm not sure I can process him as some Machiavellian evil mastermind.

That's not how he comes across in the book though (if he's playing the guy I think he is). He comes across as a fatherly figure who has nothing but the best intentions for everyone.

His whole MO is pretty much the opposite of Machiavellian

I found the book to be pretty bad. You spend 75% of it wading through this believable portrayal of a social media company, waiting for something interesting to happen. The concluding events I found to be unbelievable, not very interesting, and made me hate pretty much every character in the story. This could be a rare case where the movie has the potential to end up better than the book.

My wife is watching this right now. It's pretty terrible. Hermione should have quit acting on the high note of Harry Potter.

No no, let her continue to act, the more she does, the more apparent her lack ability will be... and she may end up in softcore porn flicks.

yeah i'm sure the chick with the highest grossing film of 2017 (Beauty and the Beast) and who is likely the highest paid actress of 2017 is going to do soft core porn soon
