Finished this up.

The plot was mostly non-existent, it was kind of like a tv series of Final Destination.

I still liked it though, mostly on strong performances from actors - particularly from Bruce Greenwood as Roderick and Mark Hamil as the family lawyer.

I'd never have guessed that Hamil could do a role like that, he really elevates what would otherwise be a generic role into something really memorable.
Particularly the scene where he politely tells the devil to go fuck herself

I don't know how anyone could say Midnight mass isn't offensive to Christians.
Muslim cop is super great guy, calls the Christians racist. Zero pushback on it.
The Priest is a giant hypocrite, who completely undermines his faith.
The main practitioners and "faithful" of the church are all dog killing, vagrant killing hypocritical monsters.
Lesbian kid of Priest is the main "hero".

Every single theological aspect around death, afterlife and vampire is expressly sacrilegious to Catholics. Christianity does not believe we are a single god communist being that split itself up into individuals on Earth, and reunite into a single being after death.
Vampire is defeated with Atheism, not god.

Every single aspect of that show is saying, "God is not real, Christian faith is wrong, and a mask to allow abusers to abuse people." Its little different or even worse then the Exorcist reboot RLM was talking about, with "call all the religions!" Take a Christian community, Christian monster, and then do nothing about attack Christians, and use Atheism to beat the monster.
well. speaking as a christian, as someone who's faith is a pretty huge part of my life and very much dictates how i view the world and the people in it... i don't really find that offensive. maybe it's because it's it has vampires in it, i automatically dismiss any kind of truth it claims. like, when i play dnd, no matter what the DM says about gods and faith and what's real or not, i understand that he's talking about it in terms of the world of dnd.

it's just a story, and sure there can be statements that are made that have real world correlation... there are some priests and pastors who commit horrible crimes that do, indeed use faith as a mask to get away with abuse. it sucks and i wish it didn't happen, but i'm not "offended" by it. it may be a scathing indictment of the church, but i welcome criticism on that level. if your faith and belief can't stand up to criticism, that can be a wonderful learning opportunity.

anyway, i'm rambling, i'm just saying that it's a story and in THAT story, there isn't a christian God. if you can't separate reality from a work of fiction then you have bigger problems than whether or not some writer hurt your feelings

From episodes 1-7 or so, it was clear this was nowhere near the quality of previous work from this group. Hill House etc. were great; even Midnight Mass with its flaws was pretty great. This wasnt great, but it was watchable. It included lots of Poe references, and the politics was kept to a minimum. We can all hate on pharma regardless of politics, right? We were enjoying this for what it was, the weakest of the series from these guys, but still fun enough to finish.

Then episode 8. Holy fuck, this retroactively makes me hate the whole thing and regret the time wasted watching it let alone defending this heap of naked, unoriginal leftist propaganda. Bad enough when
the demon chick says Trump is one of her clients, without using his name but unambiguously.
But that wasnt enough for these hacks;
that final speech from the sister, where her cuck brother just looks on in amazement at how right she is, as she explicitly names every item on the fucking leftist list of complaints, from viagra to the supreme court. It was series breakingly bad, just a complete stop in the narrative, now its time to lecture you the audience cause fuck you you dumb fucks wouldnt understand if we didnt spell it out, so here it is.

Just insanely bad. Holy shit I think I retroactively hate all his previous work now. This was Dark Tower bad. It was Lost bad. Fuck this guy and fuck everyone associated with it in any form, and most of all fuck me for watching right up to the goddam end cause they waited until then to deliver their lecture.

Three gay couples introduced within fifteen minutes of the first episode? Is that a record?

I really liked this except for the woke propaganda that they just had to insert into the last episode.
Also, is the woman supposed to actually be the “devil”, because she expressed various sentiments that would indicate otherwise.

It seemed pretty clear to me she was a demon not the devil. But I dunno, maybe after too many seasons of Supernatural I just assume things like that.

she says at one point "thats why I had to go topside" which would indicate she is from the Underworld.

To me her whole vibe was Death like in Sandman but that version was far more complex and interesting, while this version is mostly author self insertion as a sort of "humans are lame greedy fucks" meta.

She does "make a deal" with the Ushers and even mentions she doesn't need signatures, a contract or blood, a drink will do. There are plenty of "deal with the devil OR death" stories though in our myths. lol even Harry Potter has it with the Deathly Hallows.

I started Midnight Mass this week, only 5 episodes in and enjoying it a lot more. Way more creepy and I really do enjoy the twists and turns in it, I have freaked the fuck out a few times but I imagine its still pretty tame for most horror fans. Lotta talking, but I like the main cast so its great.

She seemed genuinely happy that "good" things would happen as a result of some of the deaths, so I had written off devil/demon, and figured more of a Death/Sandman style figure like you mentioned.

I enjoyed this except for the very heavy handed last episode. It is definitely the weakest of the mike flanaghan shows so far. I think knowing what was going to happen sucked out the underlying sense of dread (that his other shows all excel at) out of this one. I had also watched painkiller quite recently so it was a repeat of the same setting there.

Bly manor, hill house and midnight mass were all top shelf viewing and i look forward to his next project.

Been out of the TV Series almost a year. But I got a hold of a free Netflix so started watching. First Bodies and finished this one today. Was an Okay watch in the end. Also noticed they felt they needed to add gay couples into it, just like Bodies. It added nothing. Everything is gay now.

Whats a good recommend for similar shows? I've watched Hill House and Bly Manor I think.

midnight mass is super talky but if you like different angles on religion its not terrible. I did fast forward a lot tbh though, and its not really scary at all. I'm watching Hill House right now and i've had to literally turn the screen off and walk away cuz i was scared as fuck lol. Never had anything near that in Midnight Mass or Usher.

If you liked Bodies I'd 100% recommend watching DARK on Netflix, its similar themes but done WAY better and far more satisfying. Three seasons and in german, so thats a bit of a hurdle but totally worth it. Easily one of the top 10 shows i've ever watched... period.

If you never saw it the color version of Werewolf by Night is on D+ now. Mindhunter is a good serial killer docudrama on netflix and has Olivia from Fringe on it.

Sandman is really good too, its trippy as balls but has a lot of great mythological themes similar to Verna/Raven and once you finish season 1 (netflix) it'll be almost impossible not go out and read the completed graphic novels.

Thanks for the tips. I did watch Midnight Mass and Dark, they were a lot better for sure. Is Mindhunter worth it, I saw it was canceled but maybe the story wrapped up?

mindhunter is an embellished true crime thriller. the story doesn't really "wrap up" because its based on reality. the history of the FBI and serial killers. its like narcos

I gave this a go when I found out who did it and while it's weaker than The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass by a lot I can put it in the "like" category. Unfortunately it's very inconsistent. We get introduced to our cast and right away it's wall to wall gays and minorities. I could not suspend my disbelieve when the federal prosecutor had in his opening statement "we've got a secret witness we didn't tell anyone about" and then just kinda hand-waving away discovery when challenged. Congratulations on your embarrassing day one mistrial? Oh, the judge is letting this rock? How. Why.

I was invested enough in the story and the quality of no particular episode dipped far enough that I had a problem continuing. It's got a couple distracting speeches towards the end that are full of lefty talking points with no real connection to the larger story but I figure that's just the cost of doing business these days with a Netflix show. The jump scares didn't make me jump, I spotted the mysteries that were possible to spot but if Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gugino want to do their thing I'm happy to watch.

If anyone wants to watch this, the above review is spot on. I was enjoying it fine and then episode 8 happened. Holy shit did that ruin everything.

The interview scenes are based upon the actual interviews with said serial killers, sometimes almost word for word. Season 1 was better than season 2.

Completely agree. It was basically boring and nothing really happened (we knew all the kids were dead in the first episode), so it was just their gruesome deaths being played out when we already know what happens.
I wanted to turn it off when Verna started spouting that shit in episode 8, wife wanted to finish it. I'd give this like a 5 out of 10, it wasn't awful, but just pointless and boring. The liberal propaganda made it 2 out of 10.
