Spoilers ahead, but Idk what I'm even spoiling. Maybe you can help?
The main character is on some kind of a mission (idk what), and he's given an assortment of seemingly random items to help him on his way. I think maybe there was a bus pass, a key to a PO Box, a piece of wire, a slip of paper with a password or address or phone number or something. Things that made him say "WTF is all this garbage?" when he was given them, but ended up being exactly what he needed to overcome the obstacles on his mission.
I've read a ton of vintage Sci-Fi, and I'm not even sure if this is a short story or a novel. It feels like it might be Phillip K Dick, or maybe influenced by his particular brand of mindfucks?
