Animated movies that surprised you

Hmm stuff that surprises me I guess is pretty rare and not necessarily my favorite stuff.

Up was surprising because the start of the movie was fucking amazing. The rest was more or less what I expected but the start of the movie really left an impression.

Toy Story because it was the "first" 3D animated movie that actually didn't suck, it really reconciliated me with the US animated stuff which had kinda died out with Disney mostly releasing pretty boring stuff, and especially the singing, god. Loved most of Pixar works since then.

Ghost in the Shell because it was the first anime movie I watched and it was so good, I had read the manga but seeing all that stuff in action was really impressive. Also because it was a fucking amazing movie.

Mononoke was the first Ghibli I saw and even though I had watched a bunch of animes before(GitS and Akira for example), it was really a quality that I hadn't seen before. Funny enough before that the only Ghibli I had heard of was Porco Rosso but it didn't interest me much so I didn't watch that and didn't watch a Ghibli for a couple of years even though I knew of the reputation.

Also many years later, Satoshi Kon's work, pretty much all of it. My favorite would probably be Paprika because it's really crazy, but his early works Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress were really fucking good, not even as animated movies but just as movies.

Finally for the youth stuff, Roger Rabbit, not purely animated but the mix of animated and movie was pretty amazing back then I thought.

Wreck it Ralph actually to me was quite quite entertaining- I was not expecting much really- I think the voice actors made the movie go up a notch also.

Bastard! the best anime that has no ending...did the comics even finish?

Wreck-It Ralph was really good. I didn't expect too much, I thought I remember people here not really being impressed with it. But my kids love it too. My 3 year old says she's Taffeda, which is concerning but whatever.

Nope not finished yet. They're redoing the anime though, via movies. They're up to 3 OVA movies or so I think now? Covers about all of the old series, but with obviously much higher quality animation. They plan on releasing more too after to catch up with the manga, but they'll have to stop again at some point before the end. There's a thread about the new berzerk movies in this forum, probably page 2 or 3.

Heavy Metal for me also - I think I saw it when I was 8 or so and it came on HBO. Managed to con my aunt watching me to allow me to watch it because it was "animated" and therefore "OK for kids". Watching two aliens sniff up mounds of coke and a jewish secretary sleeping with a robot probably turned me into a weirdo though.

Watching it as an adult, the only sequence that holds up relatively well is the zombie war plane sequence. Soundtrack is still pretty good though.

Awesome, where can one aquire the new OVAs? The orig anime was a OVA series wasnt it...only like 1 dvd 5 or 6 episodes? man it was classic, just like Record of Lodoss War... I always found it kinda funny because its almost a happy ending while they look out "Yeah there are still 2 more lords of distruction that may or may not be more powerful than the one we just barely managed to kill... but lets stand on this cliff...ahh....happy sunset.....mmmm.. k lets go home yeall!" WAT?!

I personally love Blue Gender (even the Warrior OVA *after the series just to get a diff take on things*) it surprised me alot in how well it was put together... the ending(s) still bug me (no pun! haha)

Also Windaria ... wow... it surprised me in that I got connected with the characters and then FUCKING DEPRESSED OMG...

oh, it was Howls? you should go watch Laputa. Its way better.
and both very different and very different lore backgrounds... Yet they seemed to be advertised as similar to me... Or maybe I am confusing shit.. That would be par for me lol.. Anyway, both are good movies.

another surprisingly good movie I am finishing up is the Dante's Inferno anime based on the game, does the different animation styles for different things like that one deadspace anime (also surprisingly good)... I would say give both of them a shot.

yeah, the word castle and animated is about the only similarity.
yup.. I suppose what I mean to clarify is "When I think about those two movies, and their posters/art promotional visuals and clips- they seem to be trying to play off of each other and draw familiar similarities between them" - and I dont know why they would do that- as they are very different... and it could also be my old memory and just blending shit together in my messed up head.

To stay on topic- another anime series that I was surprised I enjoyed was actually a Tenchi series- the War on Geminiar (sp?) - surprisingly enjoyable little series.

Original Berserk series was 25episodes. For the new one I'd just check any torrent site really or tokyotoshokan specifically for anime related stuff. Search for Berserk 2012 or Golden Age Arc or something like that, big files since they're movies.

Yeah I saw the stuff on the new Berserk, I have not seen all of the orig- so I need to check them out- I thought it was a new Bastard animation... or are they the same thing? I thought they where different just similar in the groups that tend to like "them" so they are often together in "must watch" and comparison etc.

Edit: on topic- another animation that was better than I thought--

Titan AE - I ignored it for a long time dismissing it- but it was quite good and now I watch it every now and then.

I have actually never watched the movie of Watership Down, but I have read the book like 18 times. Shit is fucking awesome.

Yeah when i was a kid, my dad brought home this weird looking VHS called "Akira" and told me it would be awesome. And he was right. I never really got into anime though because the next one i watched was Wicked City, too much tentacle porn for me. But Akira is awesome. It wasn't until recently that I realized there are different dubbed versions, and the one they play on tv sometimes is full of shit.
friends of mine bought me and my twin brother a copy of "akira" for our 15th birthday party. still one of the best birthday gifts i've ever received. we were so enthralled with watching that movie, we didn't even want to leave to go to the party.

Oh two anime movies that I had forgotten and were pretty nice too, Ninja Scroll (Juubee Ninpuuchou). Good ninja action movie from back when I started watching anime.

Second was Jin Roh.
