There's angel investing which is what Kickstarter started off as: a way for a startup to secure funds to get a project off the ground.
And then there's what Kickstarter has become: a platform for larger, established companies to sell direct with minimal risk (you've already paid) and higher profits (less middlemen in distribution). Companies like CMON shouldn't need the platform when they can sell $10M+ of a new product.

Doesn't stop me from backing things but it does give me pause.

Kickstart stuff from promising small groups. Ignore kickstarters from big groups who use it as an up front low-risk money channel.

Not rocket surgery, guys.

I'm pretty cynical post star citizen. It's just a grift machine and way for people to offload risk by using psychology like FOMO.

Fuck em all.

I've never been happier that I stopped backing shit from the Gloomhaven series. Immediately after the Frosthaven debacle they launched a Kickstarter for Gloomhaven 2.0 and I was leaning towards it, but ultimately decided not. After finishing Frosthaven, I can definitively say I'm not backing shit from now on. We shit on people all the time for preordering video games and getting unfinished, buggy, broken products. Wait for the reviews, people. Don't put blind faith in people who accidentally put out a good product or have a good idea but no business sense.

Kickstarter is just a pre-order place now that specializes in bloated, unreviewed games that couldn't fit on a game stores shelf. High shipping costs really make most of it nonsense for the average consumer. Who really has the room for that stuff not to mention who has the game group that really wants to play that one huge costly game over and over. It can happen and in the past there are games that were worth it. I was an original Gloomhaven backer, Kingdom Death was another good example. Those are the exceptions though and passing by everything to make sure the game is good saves money overall.

The Vasel truth is that if it's a really good game it'll have a second edition, so feel no need to buy it right away. The time waiting (years probably) is a nice crucible to weigh the purchase decision in. Most of us have plenty to do/ play in the meantime.

You sound bitter. What about Star citizen would you say failed to live up to expectations?

Yeah I’ve only backed one in the past couple years, X-Men Dice Throne, because I know exactly what I will be getting. I also have plenty of board games now, and even a few I haven’t opened. I see no reason to keep buying shit when I don’t have the time for stuff I already own. The shipping costs and overall costs have gone way up in the past few years so it’s fine by me to pass on stuff.

I know a guy who has probably an hundred unopened games, and he continues to kickstart, it’s wild.

I plan to use Kickstarter (or something similar) to help my solo game dev journey with my Shining Force clone game I'm creating. Because I suck at art and music, so I'm likely going to need some capital to hire people to help me with that.

IMO that's what Kickstarter should be used for, and I've used it in similar cases a couple dozen times before, rarely with any regrets at all.

I will say that board games are usually a relatively safe bet to actually get something, even if it's buggy, late, or a you get hit up multiple times for shipping increases (fuck you Mythic Games and your fucking Ponzi scheme). I think PC games are more prone to be complete vaporware due to there being so much more risk in the development cycle.

So it's not a kick starter. But I just picked this up. I love the aesthetic of the juxtapositioned floors.

This is a D&D inspired TTRPG, looks to be quite interesting and (from what I have seen of it) fixes a lot of issues with DnD

There is a Kickstarter page for it but seems kickstarter wont let me link to it.

Seem more 5e (in fact the creator has referred to it as 6e) compatible than Crit roll's Daggerheart (which doesnt look very interesting tbh).

Looks like they were inspired by Bloodbourne.

Awaken Realms is one of my favorite board game companies, you can't beat the quality or aesthetic of their games. I have found, however, that some of their games tend to lack in gameplay, maybe from lack of playtesting. I'm talking about games like original Tainted Grail before they revised the rules, and Etherfields.

Still, I'm a sucker for their games so I will likely back it. Plus I would like to see more board game companies succeed so I figure this is like investing in something I have a passion for and believe in.

Have you played Nemesis, another Awaken Realms game? Nemesis: Retaliation is still available in the pledge manager and I'm on the fence. How hard is it?

Yes, I own Nemesis and Nemesis Lockdown. It's a top 5 game for me. If you have a group of friends to play with, it's one of the best multiplayer board games ever. It's also my favorite semi-coop game. It has a bit of a learning curve, so your first game might not be that great since everyone has to learn the rules and understand the semi-coop concept....but once you get a group that's played it a few times, there are very few board gaming experiences that can beat it. It does a fantastic job of emergent story-telling, and it's one of those board games that will create lasting memories.

I did NOT back Nemesis:Retaliation. It looks great, but I already have a ton of Nemesis content. Truth be told, I've tabled Lockdown twice, so I really should play that more before investing in even more Nemesis content. Also, I don't really find Nemesis to be a solo-friendly game, or even a good 2-player game. It really shines at 3+ people players. Since I don't have a steady gaming group anymore, I don't play multiplayer board games as often.

If you don't own any Nemesis content, then Retaliation is probably just a good an entry point as any, especially if you are getting exclusives. Or get the base game of Nemesis and see if you enjoy it. Again, the key I think is playing it with a group of people, don't just it as a solo or 2-player game, there are plenty of other games that are better at those player counts, but Nemesis is probably my favorite game at 3+ player count.
