Alpha 2 ...at the rate they have been going, might be 1 full year. Beta comes after alpha 2. Yes Alpha 2 is expensive, but if it honestly does last 6-12 months, I think it is worth it.

I have no doubt that pirate gangs will exist. The other thing that I liked seeing was the cyclops. World boss that actually roams around a zone like a Sand Giant or Reaver. I always loved the portion of adventuring that involved knowing what was roaming around you.
