From my perspective its used just to prevent big TD plays, they don't care if they get yards and drive as long as they don't give up a TD during the drive then hold when it gets down towards the goal, all the while using up clock.

That said, its horrible to watch and turns into simple throw and catch until it reaches the goal end.

Edit: but its pointless if you cant stop the TD.

It gets a lot of shit from people because they see the score getting closer, but it does what it's supposed to very effectively. The only way the Patriots win are with multiple quick scores. The prevent makes that impossible

Yeah. It's just ugly to watch, but teams keep doing it for a reason.
