"The problem is, spotting the football in the NFL is dumb"
I read somewhere that they can tell if a player was even a millimeter offsides in Soccer and I know that Tennis has that level of precision when it comes to resolving challenges, so why the fuck is a sport that I'm sure makes more that ten times the two of those added together still so heavily controlled by arbitrary human judgement calls, most of which can't even be challenged?

How does that make them money? Or is this an "actual conspiracy" take on the situation?

I think it's just irrational adherence to tradition, like umpires in baseball. I suppose there's some drama inherent in the whole chain gang routine when it's used but I think people being upset is not beneficial.

I was also reading somewhere that the tracker inside the football (yes, there is one already) isn't yet accurate enough to be down to the inch and do so in a timely manner. It's a more complicated issue than boundary marking, apparently, though one wonders if they're actually putting much resources into solving the technical hurdles.

Everything makes them money and promoting professional gambling was a terrible idea when you've put so little money into fixing the myriad of problems your sport has had for decades. You say traditional adherence but we both know that's a load of shit. Only the most basic things are relatable to the product they put on the field just 25 years ago. Player health is super important unless you play defense or want to play on natural fields. A basic 100 yard rectangle somehow can't have precision measurements in 2025. Refs somehow aren't accountable for the decisions they make. No one really knows what a catch is. Should I go on about 'professional football' that not only allows professional betting but encourages it? Why can't these billionaires and the NFL itself fix some of these basic issues? Traditional adherence when a QB gets 15 yard calls if their helmet is touched by a finger? Get the fuck outta here with that dumb shit.

Because "controversy" sells?

You don't think the NFL makes money off people talking about a bullshit call 24/7? C'mon, bruh.

Sure, but I think there's somewhere along the spectrum of "any publicity is good publicity" where it actually does more harm than good.

I guess we're not there yet, judging by how many people seem to hate the state of the game on here and on Reddit but continue to watch it.

You still have Cowboy fans. Delivering a shitty product definitely still generates revenue and all the shit talking sells, ESPECIALLY in 2025.

Yeah the type of GPS that could go inside a ball is probably only accurate to within a couple of feet. Maybe even a couple of meters. Easily worse than the ref's eyes. Millimeter accuracy GPS does exist but it's bigger and expensive and needs to be calibrated regularly. Also it's not enough to know the position of the ball, you need to know it at the instant the player's elbow or knee or chest or whatever touches the ground. Finally, how accurate are the lines on the field? They would have to be within millimeters also or what the ball recorded wouldn't match the lines that the players/refs/fans see even if it was "accurate".

I don't think it's impossible, but it would be a lot more complicated than "Just put a chip in the ball".

Yeah it’s a completely different problem than soccer or tennis. Most of the controversial calls for shit like this is because the cameras don’t have a clear view of what’s going on in and under a mass of bodies.

Except on things like yardage markers, you could still "draw lines" based on the ball relative to the yardage markers.

European Football has done that for years and the only reason the NFL doesn't is because it costs money and the "outrage" over controversial calls gets them more eyeballs/buzz and thus revenue.

AB can be pretty funny

I had the same thought honestly. I'm sure somebody from State Farm or Pfizer will be there to officiate the wedding on the spot.

This AB guy seems like a pretty level headed dude.

They have a hundred fucking times the resources of tennis and soccer. There's no fucking way some combination of rfid chips and cameras cant accurate resolve 99.9% of close plays.

I remember watching a Bears game this past season where a certain camera view determined whether a player was in or out of bounds. But as the referee stated (paraphrased), "Since others stadiums do not have this particular camera angle, it cannot be used here for this play."

Unbelievable!
