Chesterfield Police are asking for the public's help identifying who fired a shot that fatally struck a young boy at a fireworks celebration Thursday.

Just before 9 p.m., 7-year-old Brendon Mackey was walking with his family anticipating a fireworks show in Brandermill over the Swift Creek Reservoir when the boy suddenly fell.

Citizens rushed to help the boy and discovered bleeding from his head. Brendon was rushed to VCU Medical Center where doctors discovered a gunshot wound in the top of his head.

Brendon Mackey died Friday from his injuries.

Police believe the shot was fired randomly into the air, likely some distance away from the fireworks celebration.

Happened three streets over from where I live, the town is up in arms right now, and there's a group protesting about the lack of gun control in our county. It's unfortunate that a child (or anyone for that matter) was killed due to an irresponsible jackass shooting their gun in the air, but getting a group of whiney liberals together with signs saying shit like, "Less guns = less senseless deaths" etc, is retarded and disrespectful to the family IMO.

Thoughts?

I bet if they didn't have a gun they would have found a way to accidentally kill that kid anyway. They probably had shurikens they would have been indiscriminantly throwing around in place of the bullets. Guns are not a problem.

Seriously though, probably better for the gun control thread...But if you're asking what you should do? Nothing. People will be stupid whenever the opportunity arises. The correct course of action is always to distance yourself from the stupidity and let it burn itself out. (This seems oddly relevant to this board for some reason.)

I'm not asking what I should do, just curious what people's thoughts were on the matter because the whole town here seems to be in an uproar. I'm just bewildered that people are going so overboard with the anti-gun sentiment around where I live

Exactly, stupid people do stupid shit that gets innocent people killed. No different that stupid people who get drunk than drive and run someone over.

Abhorrent that it happens? Of course. But if youre gonna sit there and say ban guns you might as well say ban cars, ban alcohol, hell ban everything.
