Stop being ignorant. The affluency of his parents plays a HUGE factor on how this kid turned out and what has happened. That's like saying a kid who was molested as a child and has no self esteem are both unrelated.

You graduate to get that psychology degree with a 2.0 GPA? The affluency of his parents has very little to no factor on how this kid turned out you dumb shit. Parents from all walks of life and all kinds of financial backgrounds ignore their kids and don't teach them personal accountability and culpability.

Well in reality, the kid is morally excused from a lot of responsibility for this because of how his parents are. At 16, you have had no chance to develop a sense of morality on your own. The same can be said for any inner city kid who sells drugs on the corner and murders a rival dealer or sees some rich looking person in the wrong neighborhood and robs him/her, gets into a scuffle and the person dies. Morally, these people are less culpable than someone who grew up in a good family and decides to be a shithead anyway.

This kid will also come out a better person going to this rich person's treatment center or whatever the hell he's doing as punishment. He will be a much better person coming out of that than going to jail for 20 years and learning from career criminals how to thwart the law and pretend to play nice.

However, none of these things matter legally. If we don't have the resources to send poor people to high quality treatment centers, we can't send the wealthy there just bc they have money. We also don't change the law to cater to shitty parenting. These things matter, and matter a lot, but we can't consider them when sentencing for crimes

I find it hard to believe that you can take a stance like this. Going to a "rich person's treatment center" will make him a better person than going to jail? Mind telling us how you came to this conclusion? You think sticking him in some institution that costs 450 fucking thousand dollars a year filled with like-minded people who have the same access to money he does is going to be better for him than sticking him with wild animals who will quite literally scare him straight? You might as well just leave him in the care of his parents.

I don't understand how there are people out in the world who agree with this verdict. It baffles the shit out of me. This is quite literally your argument:

"Well the kid didn't know any better because his parents never taught him. So society and the goddamn legal system aren't going to teach him either. But somehow he's magically going to become a better person for never having learned his lesson"
