I'm going to watch the first 3 episodes this week.

I wish with the amount of money they put behind this they would have just done a Dredd series on Showtime with Urban.

This could be really good.
I want to hate it on principle, I do. But honestly for a regular network show so far this seems to be a fucking masterpiece.

Sure, you give the same group a HBO contract and it's probably a better show -- but it's a FOX show and it is not bad at all.

And yeah there's a pretty good Alien Nation vibe to be had. But that's because Alien Nation was a sci-fi buddy cop format show that didn't completely fucking suck. There's not a lot else to compare it to.

It is nice to see a show that uses a generous amount of special effects while not over doing it. The acting is very well done, as is the dialogue. Karl Urban makes the show but his partner does a great job as well. Definitely will be watching this show as it seems to have a lot of promise. The potential moral issues that could crop up in this show dealing with everything from cloning to nano-technology is becoming more and more relevant in this day and age. It is difficult not thinking of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd but that scene where he takes an honest moment to hug the survivor helped to alleviate that feeling.

For a FoX show I am impressed, which means we should enjoy the only season this show will exist.

This is a sexy show, but the bolded part is the bitter truth.

I still love it though.

looking at the ratings, would be surprised if it gets a full season, unless there is some network deal go on.

Just watched this weeks episode, I thought it was pretty good but I'm going to want to start seeing some story tied into all of this at some point.

Why, exactly? I'm not picking on you specifically Tarrant, but I keep seeing this get brought up again and again in the TV section. Don't get me wrong, if it is done well it can make a show even better, but if it is done badly it will just make the show worse. Some shows are better off sticking to the "monster of the week" formula instead of trying to shoehorn in some grand, overarching plot. Take early CSI, Law and Order, hell even early X-Files, the vast majority of Farscape, old shows like Fantasy Island, etc. I could name dozens. Sometimes it is fun just to see characters confronting new problems each week.

I'm all for serialized stories with a larger goal; shows like Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Sopranos, Shield, Breaking Bad, etc. are all awesome and better for being one big story (for the most part). But not every show is better that way. What's wrong with a show that if you skip a week you can watch the following and not have missed anything?

Maybe it is because I'm older and I'm used to all those old shows that had no larger story. A-Team, Dukes of Hazzard, Love Boat, Knight Rider, Airwolf, Greatest American Hero...more than I can remember I'm sure. Those were all awesome shows, in their own way. I just don't get why everyone insists that there has to be more to like a show nowadays. Sometimes I just want to sit down and be entertained for 40 minutes. Who cares if it ties into something else two months from now?

I felt like it was a weak episode. That was barely more than boilerplate buddy cop hostage situation. There were just too many tropes present. A story arc at least involves you with strong characters and agendas. This episode could have not happened and it wouldn't matter. It may have even improved the show.

Because at the moment it's to much "feel good TV" I want some story lines to darken it up a bit. The whole premise when this started was cop was ambushed due to corruption in his office, partner was killed, he got his leg blown off and a year later the syndicate seems to be showing it's head again. Cop gets partnered with a machine akin o the one who left him and his partner to die.

The premise is gritty and I liked it....but now it's shifting towards feel good relationship between man and machine and how not to discriminate and accept someone who is different.

I liked the first one more than the second.

Also, they didn't skip a week, this is two episodes of three now that have been stand alone.

And I'm no young kid myself, I appreciated those shows you mentioned as well, but television and entertainment has evolved and you have to go deeper now. Related content makes you care more about it and the characters, that's what I would like to see.

I watched the last 2 episodes, and yeah, just cant get behind this. Its like something is missing and Tarrant hits the nail on the head. There is no depth to any of these characters because they are not evolving any. A show which goes from one crime scene to another with no overall story arch evolving the main characters is boring.

Character development is the most important quality of any movie or tv show but your condemnation is a little premature considering they're only 3 episodes in.

They have to trick people into thinking it's a procedural or they won't watch.

The only shows that make it these days are episodic I don't know what you guys are talking about.

People (the masses) don't do shows with mandatory episodes to understand what is going on. I think now that a hook is set they will dabble in the background plot more.

What a shame. They blew a perfect opportunity to have Urban scowl and say "I AM the law!"

For whatever reason this week's episode was broadcast as the visually impaired version, which meant there was a narrator in between every dialogue explaining what was going on. Never had this happen for anything before, but fuck watching with this bullshit.

Verizon FIOS, DC area. No idea.
