So 6 months ago I bought a new comp (actually one that was recommended here). Well the 6 month anti virus that came on it (Trend) is about to expire and it's going to be about 60 bucks to renew for a year.
My questions are, Is Trend a good Anti Virus? Is 60 bucks a year about average for protection? Is there one you all would recommend over others? I have been running AVG free for the last few years but I know its pretty crap.

No idea if Trend is any good. I just use common sense and let Windows defender do it's thing. It's been 15 years or more since I last installed an antivirus.

I was actually thinking I would not use one....I dont go to any sketchy or porn sites, hell besides gaming on the computer and this forum that's about all I do with it

I used to use McAfee/Norton when I was still in the military because we got them for free. Since I've been out (2011) however, I haven't bothered to run anything other than Windows Defender and haven't had a single problem. I also don't click links in emails or fuck with sketchy sites.

I've used Eset Nod32 for over 10 years now. Never had a problem.

Yeah, Windows Defender plus uBlock/Privacy Badger in the browsers has got me through the last ~12 years without a secondary anti-virus package.

Another Windows defender user here. I also have Malwayrebytes on my PC. I scan anything sketchy (and sketchy can mean ANYTHING in this day and age ) both are free and I have had exactly zero bugs. Anything that may be suspect (game mods / trainers / etc) gets run in a VM instance to make sure.

Remember : It's not paranoia if they are really out to get you. (tm)

I have not tried Trend but the one that comes with most os's is free and works well.

i've had a multiple user subscription to webroot for years

before amazon had a digital delivery i did newegg (who knows what happened to that account, lulz buying from newegg ever again)

anyway the reason why i have it is cuz i've had to telnet into my nephews laptop twice, and had to rebuild file structures... a teen that just got into college, i don't want to know what he visited, i put webroot on it the second time he fucked up and he never bothered me again. i'd buy a yearly subscription, cuz i knew he'd forget.

once he hit 25 i said, youre old enough to buy your own damn antivirus, just click buy when the window pops up that your subscription expired... thats all you have to do.

nope, i'm too old for this shit and told him to goto his other tech savvy friend (that i also kind raised/babysat)

anyway webroot is college kid tested.

(and yes i had the extra subscription, and i could have just kept on giving it to him, but i wanted to see if he'd fail or not)

Antiviruses are a complete waste of money IMO unless you have data of some sort of actual worth on your computer. For your needs, you're lighting money on fire by spending anything at all. I haven't used or needed to use an antivirus in at least 10 years. You pretty much have to make an effort to get a virus these days.

Been using AVG free for the last 15 years or so. Now its just constantly blocking sites when and spaming me with notification pop ups when I try to use any high seas sites or even online retail stores. Should I just disable it and use defender or switch to a new free one?

Defender and common sense is usually good enough.
