I'm fucking dying LOL. I almost want to get the full painting now just to show it to yall when done

Is this oil or acrylic? Looks like acrylic. First WIP is usually a pencil sketch. I'm curious what it looked like.

I'm curious what this artists other finished works look like. Never commission art without a look at their portfolio.

The ~$500 purchase I made that I felt dumbest making was a single bitcoin. She's at $11.5k now though.

Yea I don't know shit about art, other than the fact it can look like complete ass, but if the person who painted it is popular people pay millions for it. So my question to @Falxy-US would be, do you want a painting that looks exactly like some digital poster that you could get for $10 that no one is going to take a second look at, no less converse about. OR do you want something which is interesting. I'd argue this is interesting, more so than some of the other pictures you linked. When you show your friends, talk it up like some artsy fartsy shit, describe how the artist felt when he made racoon look slightly special needs. Plus the fact you agreed to pay for it.

I don't know that you should pay $500, but you've gotta pay something. If you agreed to $500 and this art is commensurate with what the artist typically does, suck it up and pay it.

Frankly I don't know why anyone would commission a custom painting for something as pedestrian as a popular Marvel character. This isn't an idea you had that you needed someone with talent to bring to life, it's a cliche pop-culture piece you could just grab for a few bucks just about anywhere.

I hear you, but there's something about "original" one off pieces of art. I have some really great art in my house, it's all one off pieces. For my movie room I wanted some DC/Marvel stuff. I have a great Wonder Woman 1984 painting, and a bizarre abstract Thor, and I wanted something HUGE for this big empty wall. And I apparently picked an artist who peaked in 7th grade.

There's just something about art when like you can see the brush strokes and the paint piled up on the canvas. Something about that, that you wouldn't get from just having something printed out on canvas.

Speaking of spunked.

@Falxy-US, you can just spunk on a blank canvas and have the $10 screen print on that to get the "paint piled up" texture.

You should also ask him what inspired him to choose amputee Groot.

Is the artist a thalidomide baby? Is that the explanation for his painting skill?

Im in the no fucking way should you pay 500 for that crowd. However, if you are going to pay make him finish that bad boy for the people.

The laughs we're getting over this = priceless.

This forum seems to create its own memes. I think we've got a new one, the commissioned Groot & Rocket painting.

its for my movie room!

I posted pics of my theater room in the home theater forum. I also have this crazy Thor abstract painting and this badass Wonder Woman 1984 painting. (This is a “work in progress” pic)

the groot rocket pic is six foot wide, five foot tall. So it would be a monstrous turd on the wall.

If you are serious and want a painting of that and can spend more in the realm of 1 to 2k i can connect you with a art collective with plenty of decent real artists, not some deviant art failure.

1-2k is a lot of art. I spend a LOT on art every year, and there's only been a few times that I've gone that high, and only once that I've gone much higher. For that price I'd expect a professional artist with a lot of reference, concepts provided free of charge (maybe not to someone who isn't a known buyer), and WIP with input at each step. I also typically pay in advance once the concept is accepted at the higher range.

The whole idea of commissioning a painting from an artist without seeing any of his paintings is very very absurd. I am pretty sure it is super trivial to find many people on Deviant Art who do high quality Marvel fan arts. Probably only a small minority of those do actual paintings instead of digital works, but still... I would rather go that route than going for an artist that might be very good but is likely to not know or not care about the subject matter. Another route I would look into, but that might be a lot more expensive, is having it done by a painter specialized in movie posters (through hiring a professional in that field might come with annoying hurdles when it comes to copyrights - selling an unlicensed painting of a Marvel IP is probably a problem).
