Unfortunately I have a built in bias after over a decade of the normal DIKU gameplay that I really didn't see this aspect of combat right off the bat. I just saw screens of hotbars full of abilities. The key to MOBA gameplay is 3 short CD attacks, 1 long CD and two longer CD plus clickies. Once you start getting 10+ abilities, it's just 'meh" for me. This could happen in AA, but you're naturally limited by this because of only have 25 points to place into your classes and using them on passives.
Draegan, you were correct in your first analysis. The game is good but the combat does, indeed, suck. If you wanted to be nice about it, you could call it "throw-back" but its pretty bad. Rest of the game is AAA though.

There are two ends of the spectrum here: WOW and TERA.

GW2: It's tab target based, but a target can walk in front of your fireball and get hit even if you target someone behind them. Melee attacks hit shit in front of you regardless of your target. For a lot of attacks, you don't even need a target. I would classify this as a Hybrid system.

TESO: Where GW2 was closer to WOW, TESO is closer to TERA. It's not truly free-form action like TERA, but you still need to aim your character in the proper direction and perform abilities while still pointing in that direction. You do not simple tab target something and start pressing buttons.

Wildstar: This game is fucked up. It's hotbar combat kind of, but every single attack is essentially a ground target AOE attack. It's pretty much GW2 but everything is a AOE attack in some fashion.

Neverwinter: Action based game. It's closer to TERA than most games.

Every single game listed here has some sort of activated dodge associated with it.

I think TERA has the best combat on the market, animation lock and all (I've learned that animation lock is the most important aspect of that kind of combat).
OK I've played all of those except Wildstar. WoW & GW2 are the only one that didn't have attacks associated with LMB/RMB. I actually prefer that since I have carpal tunnel in my right wrist and any game that is a mouse clickfest causes it to flare up. I guess one reason I liked combat in WoW, Rift and SWTOR is because I could fire off all my abilities just using my left hand. I guess this is one more positive in AAges favor.

Does mouse turning eff up your wrist that much? Glider mouse turning is a bit gnarly.

It was a pretty steep transition for me to go from TESO to AA and "Relearn" my UI multitasking I must admit.

I've lost a bunch of pvp fights because I'm desensitized from TESO. Glad I picked up Alpha to work out the kinks.

*** I have a super weak right wrist because of my 19 years of competitive bowling, I throw a huge crank on my ball and sometimes it dislocates randomly ***

Everyone's got their personal preference.

@Oloh - I agree it's still shitty, but it's not as shitty. For a tab target system it's pretty good. I still heavily prefer TERA. The combo system and everything else make it tolerable.

Speaking of Tera, what happened to the old FoH guild that Oloh was in charge of? I took a week or two break from that game shortly after Oloh was elected vanarch and when I come back most people had already abandoned the game.

LOL @ $150 founder bullshit to get into alpha/beta.

The gaming industry is fucking fleecing people left and right with this shit and yet we all still bend over like good little schoolgirls and take the dick up our collective asses.

We now pay for demos

We pay for beta

We pay for alpha

We pay subs

Buy in game items

And yet all these games are F2P supposedly.
It really just comes down to companies preying on how much of an "instant gratification" society we've become, especially since the rise of the internet. For better or worse, humanity is essentially addicted to the internet/technology. This thread is a great example of that. We all lament about the business practices of these companies, yet we shell out money hand over fist, sending them the message that this is all ok. Game companies are literally laughing, watching youpayfor access to things which used to be free. You're working as pseudo QA for their product, and you're payingthemfor the pleasure of doing so? Do you realize how ludicrous that sounds?

Most people don't even have the foresight to think about this logically.."Ok, well...if I play beta for 6+ months, get all my progressed wiped at the end, am Ireallygoing to want to playanother3 months? Or am I going to be burned out as hell, spending most of my free-time in a game, making progress that all gets erased in a short period of time?". Instead, that thought process is countered with.."Fuck it! Give me access now!!!!!!". Or, they'll justify it another way, "Well, this game is a week of X for me! How dare you question how I spend my money!". When in reality, they're notusuallygiving up X, they're simply throwing more cash down. It's really quite fascinating to watch people rationalize all of this with themselves.

The $150 is really a waste if you fall under the following:
Anyway, you're essentially looking at $30 upgrade for in game items, early access and alpha access since you theoretically get the rest of the value back. $30 isn't much for me, and is worth the cost I think.

Ah well. Some people will hate.
Right, which is how people are trying to justify/rationalize the cost to themselves. "Well, you see.. if I get 120$ worth of "stuff", I really only spend 30$ for early access!". Most people aren't being mindful of the fact that by the time this is actually released, by the time they've spent countless hours in game, only to see it all erased, are they even going to use those goodies? Or are they doing to just burn themselves out? Like you said, if you want to just check the game out, you can go play the Russian version.

My GF spends a lot more than $150 for that kind of shit.

$120 for prototype butt shorts, the analogy isn't quite based though as most of these things have solid-ass return policies.
Going from fat chicks to chicks who wear $120 prototype butt shorts. Brings a tear of happiness to my eye.
