They usually have multiple independent login servers and don't want to make the effort to get them to coordinate, so depending on how they actually pull people from the queues, they can frequently end up with significantly different queue sizes. Which is why cancelling and trying again can move you around in position quite a bit.

I mean, I was willing to pay the monthly fee if I still had the chance to get to the top. But I'm not dropping loads of money on a game.

so I just sat in character select for 2 hours or so while I watched Sleepless in seattle with the GF (the price men pay for video games) and I didn't get kicked into a queue. Possible afk timer bypass?

Think Ill give this a go when the normal launch starts since I have the next week off, I don't really know much of anything about the game and it looks fairly complicated ... is there a cookie cutter ranged spec I can use to get started while I learn the ropes? Is there stuff I should be aiming for at the start (like claiming land or whatever don't know how any of that works)?

Yeah... seeing that too Ridas. It looks like it should be patching something at the log in but it is stalling and then kicking over to the intro loop.

Edit: And now the login servers seem jammed

This has been a surprisingly inept launch for them, especially given how smooth Rift was (invasion frequency notwithstanding)

@Tuco: Would be more relevant if the WHOLE GAME'S log in server was not what was fubar, server selection won't help you get past the universal login server
