However, we get a brief glimpse that there are people in the world that do actually speak, but these mutes can't understand them I guess because it is portrayed to us in gibberish sounds that are close to real language but not.

It's actually not gibberish. The man in the car speaks Esperanto, and he asks her the following:

He asks her if she is one of the survivors, if she is alone, why she is covered in blood, and if she is hungry. He proceeds to tell her that he lives at the end of the road and that there will be food for her there. He also asks her about the cross-shaped marking on her throat.

Ah ok, thanks. I still believe that it wasn't important to understand it; they just used something that has actual structure and meaning, but almost no one in the world would actually understand so that it still sounded legit. And from your translation, I pretty much got the gist of what he said anyway.

And as you can tell, he asks about one of the things that we never get an answer to, which reinforces what I said about the audience being clueless while all of the characters (except this guy) probably have more info than we do.

So yeah, don't wait for subtitles. There is literally like 3 or 4 lines, and you can read what kroenen posted if it absolutely matters to you. If you watch, it won't matter to you.

Watched it yesterday and its a wierd movie. No speaking in it just makes it a different kind of movie. Not sure if I even liked it or not.

Conclusion: No smurfs or Gargamel or his cat.
