I am so fucking hard right now.

Fuck all the neckbeards whining about stupid fucking pause combat. That shit was a complete joke and every difficult fight in every game that uses it turns in to shitty psuedo turn based mode by mashing pause 50 times a battle because it was the only way the game functions. Baldur's Gate had this problem, so did Planescape, and Pillars of Eternity, literally every single one.

Absolutely nothing is gained by real-time+pause other chaos and a shittier, manual turn-based combat.

It also isn't true to d&d which is turn-based. I hate rtwp, so I'm happy about this

The worst part is all the "real-time" games still use fucking initiative and action orders, so even when you give a dude an order he sits there and fucking waits his turn anyway.

I get so unreasonably triggered by people trying to defend that shitty goddamn system.

I'm fine with turn based combat, but the game feels nothing at all like Baldurs Gate whatsoever.

But I'm not convinced that's a bad thing either, I'm gonna play the fuck out of this.

Only time I liked "real time combat" was when it was easy fodder enemies, pretty much made it a sped up auto battle. Beyond that turn based is way better.

The one advantage is trash fights, where you can let it play out. Iirc BG had simplistic AI, same in Pillars and you could basically let it play out and maybe pause once or twice to adjust things but that made trash fights faster.

On the flipside, you could design your game to make the trash fights interesting and you wouldn't need to rely on AI playing it for you.

Pretty much this. If you design your game properly, you shouldn't ever really have a "trash" fight.

Yep. DOS2 was all curated 'arena' fights. With turn based you don't need to worry about padding up the number of encounters to add gametime and you can focus on improving the quality of fewer fights rather than just throwing a bunch of shit at the player. Provided they do it in a way that makes the world feel lived in rather than it just being a transparent game element, then it's a far better experience.

I mean, I love old style despite its flaws, but most fights for me involved just throwing as much aoe at unsuspecting enemies followed by just A-moving my melee in to clean shit up and hoping I don't get fucked by rolls.

man that shit REALLY looks like Divinity: OS 2 still.. just modded for DnD rules. Does look like they put some effort into getting alot of DnD rules in though. Lighting/cover, push, jump, fall damage, etc. he hasn't gotten to skill checks yet.

Dialogue options. This was really good. you pick INTENT and thoughts, not dialogues. this opens up the classic crpg of lying, etc. Will make less problems with alignments too ideally, since you should be more clearly picking intent.

not finished with the vid yet... wonder how skill challenges will work. did "jump" or the "push" have a roll involved?

Pretty sure RAW spells do not interact in Dnd. Can't set Grease on fire. even with spells that specifically say they light things on fire. (fireball, burning hands). only spells that specifically SAY they light things on fire, can even start wildfires. magical water won't put out magical fire, etc. Fireballs can be cast underwater just fine, and so on.

I do kindof think they should have called it something else.

Damn, showing how underused/lame spells from earlier games are highly interactable in this one. Grease to cause actual issues and then lighting it on fire is dope.

That was actually one of DOS:II's strengths. Toss shit on the ground, light it on fire, pray to god they don't have a water spell to put it out.

This is one of the ways that I think that Larian's leading the fucking way with gaming. 'Cause EA and ActiBlizz (hell, all AAA dev's) aren't.

As someone mentioned earlier the tense of the verbiage is still strange. It isn’t like future prefect or present when deciding tour actions. Just off.

I didn’t get any Baldur’s Gate vibe from this, I got tons of Divinity Original Sin though...either way I’ll be getting this.

Never played Divinity Original Sin before. Guess Imma have to get it off steam to see if I like it before I invest money in BG3. Is this game really that good?

DoS2 is fantastic, and is one of the best RPG's made, let along CRPG.
