calls police, "we don't have cars to send out right now". yeah, thats not how that works. somehow she doesn't notice how run down this neighborhood is while driving in. even at night in the rain. your headlights did work. you read house numbers to find the place.. goes BACK to the place after the "mixup", seeing its a shithole, and her friend telling her that area is not safe.
earlier in the movie, there is that scene where she says, " a women needs to be more careful", and how she wouldn't have let him in.
keith wanting to see the room for himself makes sense. her having to decide to help him now, or go get help makes sense. most movies would have used this as a stupid guy being an ass jumpscare.
aj measuring the rooms just highlights another problem... the size, and keith "hiding". hate when movies/games do this. aint no one hiding and having conversations in these tunnels or any house. its idiotic. do movie creators live in 30 room mansions that they think you can hide in a 4 room house, or talk and not have everyone inside hear you, and people outside as well?
80's flashback. tons of products that were not around in the 80's. weird. ain't no general store or supermarket look like that then either.
The houses are literally 20x20 on the outside, and suddenly 50x50 on the inside.
I think this cartoonish surrealism hurts the movie. this isn't like the shining where things not lining up, and rooms not fitting adds to the tension. this feels more careless.
you have a women screaming as he opens the door, in this house thats 15ft away from the neighbors house.
bum, who apparently knew about mutant, and other things in there.. how?
again, with police. "ive been kidnapped and escaped". ok maam. have a nice day.
would have been better if AJ survived with his bullshit. even if tess also survived both.
The social satire is very intentional. the police ignoring her. maybe the 80's/50's utopia being so fake was intended. her comments about women, and his retort that women can hurt men was pretty blatant foreshadowing. the social satire of AJ living and having hurt tess repeatedly would have been stronger.
