Don't understand why folks are outraged over the movie, how many horrible Toy IPs did Hollywood make for 'Boys' that were horrible retarded dogshit over the past 50 yrs? 80? 100?

It's about time women got their childhoods hijacked and ruined too.
Apparently there are a bunch of 40+ dudes who are absolutely shocked to find out they aren’t the target audience of this movie.

At some point thats basic human nature, hate/outrage sells far more than praise/uplifting content.
Is it though? Or is it something that has been conditioned into us by the tech+media apparatus?

I remember when the internet was just a bunch of cute pet pictures, video games, and porn. It wasn't until the traditional media and social media turned up the algorithms that we all started hating each other.

I think you might have nature/nuture backwards here.

Sure it was but you had to have the exact Usenet group to see it. Social Media just made it way easier to find and participate in so instead of a pile of nerds its your fucking retarded uncle or whatever.

People have always hated people, you dont have genocides / ethno states or segregation laws without em, now instead of hating someone cause they are black they hate em because they liked a Barbie movie.

Flame wars definitely happens on the old internet but most of the internet was good faith discussion back then, just smart people sharing what they knew with other smart people. And even most flame wars were productive arguments. Some of the very technologies that power the internet today came from those flame wars.

The shift to blatantly unproductive drama between sets of people who will never change their mind about anything is a relatively new phenomenon, less than 10 years old, and is a direct result of algorithmic content promotion and audience capture.

It wasn't so much that, it was just that early internet had less wide spread access, so the types of people engaging on the internet tended to belong to specific niches. Early adopters, nerds, college kids. Stuff like AOL and later on more widely available regular ISPs as we recognize them today started to bring in more people, but normies didn't start really joining the conversation until stuff like social media made it easy for them. Places like Myspace/Facebook/etc became their usenet/forums. Then the money making potential became more real and now the internet is more or less required for people to use. Want to pay bills? Apply for a job? Get documents? While the old school ways of doing things still exist, there is a pretty clear push towards making people do stuff online. Now people shop and order groceries and work online. It's everywhere. And when something is everywhere, everyone is there as well.

apart from the usual culture war = smartphones + social media repetition, what has also changed is the ability to monetise the internet/opinions as an influencer. Hence the "grifter" taunt that's popped up in recent years. Also other metrics such as likes, retweets etc - and it soon becomes obvious to anyone that the more extreme takes get the most engagement

My point was that it wasn't human nature. It's what the tools are doing to us.

Most news media should have always been local, and national news media should have remained restricted to an hour or so a day.

true, 24 hour news demands way too much filler sensational garbage

Are the tools doing it to us or simply unlocking what's there? I think any nurture vs nature question comes down to "it's both" ultimately.

Rage has been one of the fundamental controlling forces of humans since the written word.

Look no further than religion or SJWs. They exert control with outrage and disgust(youre a heretic, youre a racist), not with logic or reason.

The Smart Phone did FAR more to "harm" the internet at large than social media ever did. If not for "ease" of access via smart phones, you'd still mostly have to have a PC/Laptop of some kind to access the internet. That alone would've shut out a lot of people.

You're agreeing with me but not smart enough to realize it.
