Having had some time to relax and do something else for a while I realized what an intense 24 hours that was.
I just sat down and was trying to decide what to play last night and I heard about the cop getting shot at MIT, somehow found a link to the scanner (I have never listened to a scanner before). About 5 minutes after I turned it on I hear some rather intense cops saying 'definitely automatic weapon fire' and 'multiple explosions, they have grenades'. Literally slept about 2 hours and listened to this shit unfold real-time until they got white hat. Between here, the scanner and reddit, being able to experience shit as it happened was fucking awesome. The level of detail available and the accuracy of it is astounding and far beyond what cable news can provide. And I remember when cable news was some next level shit. Not that long ago shit would happen and you wouldn't know about it until some dude on a horse could get to where you are at.
The significance of this event is pretty massive too. The first major terror attack on US soil since 9/11 (I think?) The first attack by non-Arab Islamists. There were probably quite a few people that had a hard time grasping non-brown islamists. The first attack by somewhat home grown jihadis that are not directly linked (probably) to a major terror network. The first Mumbai-style 'city under siege' attack in the US (I would not be surprised to see more of these as they are cheap, hard to detect, and apparently pretty effective) and also the first time we get to see a coordinated large scale effort by what would probably best be described as our 'security forces'. I have to say, it was pretty impressive, if a bit unsettling. I was really impressed with the coordination between all the different agencies. They have come a long way since 9/11. I was also impressed with the professionalism that BPD displayed, aside from some sloppy 'open mics' especially later in the event when they were probably pretty exhausted. Quite the contrast with LAPD lighting random people the fuck up when they were after Dorner. And BPD has a Sargent Fury, which is badass. Also, their commissioner looks like Bruce Willis.
Anyway, not to get too gay on you, but I'm really glad that this community survived Donkey Gate.
