The point is to give some friction in the system to get it to dial back, but not to feed into the system. Think of it like a pendulum in a zero friction environment - if you place your hand in front of it, to give a simple "No, that's bad" it swings back and next time comes with a little less power until it peters out.

I literally have to defuse shit as a large part (although thankfully one I mostly offset to other people these days since I hate doing it) of my life - at no point is "respond equally" a method that has stopped ANYTHING.
