Just some observations I made from my 6 season binge this week.
Tory is the most tragic character on the show. She reminds me so much of Kari Byron From Mythbusters. When her mom dies I yelled out, Jesus Christ, this chick can't cut a break.
Robby Keene is a weird character played by an even weirder actor. Dude never looks directly at anyone. I started to think he was secretly blind IRL.
Martin Cove is way too old to be John Kreese. They used his younger self for fight scenes now.
Sam is an entitled bitch and a horrible person. The only things I like about her are her beautiful blue eyes and soft pillow talk voice.
Hawk. I can't stand him or that stupid bird cry audio sting whenever he does something. Him and Stingray are the worst.
Mr Lawrence is cool, but they made him so dumb. Daniel is cool too, but he needs to get the fuck over his boyfriend, Mr Miyagi.
I like Carmen. She is very nice on the eyes. So is Mrs La Russo. Watching them dance was a highlight. I even like Macchio's 30 something year old daughter who plays Nessa. I said I like the Asian baddie, but she's stupid. This mixed Asian girl, Devon has potential for being a hottie. But she's just adorable right now.
All in all. The show is not great, but it still can shit out nuggets of awesome. My favorite scene is the school fight segment at the end of season 3.
Also a question. Why do Tory and Robbie talk about not being able to go to college because they were in Juvie? Is that a thing?
S6 was good, as this show always is, but man do I have a bunch of things nagging at me about it.
Really not sure why S6 isn't split into S6 and S7, rather than having it come out in 3 parts over like ten months. That doesn't even make sense. Just put the rest together and release it next year as S7. Everyone likes seven season shows.
Give us two more episodes of S6 with them actually hanging out in Barcelona, rather than just a plane landing and a wide shot of the city and oop they're at the tournament now. All that hype about going to Barcelona and they do absolutely nothing with the city.
The Miyagi love segments die down a bit in S6 as we find out that Miyagi actually wasn't a great guy! Deconstructed!
Sam is the true villain of this show, been saying it for years. They treat her like the main protagonist of the kids, when she's actually the one who's caused pretty much all of their interpersonal problems.
I marked out when Tory turned heel for the 18th time.
Devon is low-key super hot and also has a lot of attitude. Just wish she were a few years older. She's already dominating the screen away from the main two girls, and she's interesting because of her heelish tendencies.
When they were picking people for the tournament qualifiers and could only choose 12, I was like "I bet it's the 12 characters with actual speaking roles" and lo and behold, it was the 12 characters with actual speaking roles. All the extras were left to look all disappointed in the background.
Sam is in no way believable as a top-tier fighter at this point who can compete in the world tournament. She literally doubled in size since earlier seasons. How'd she let that happen in real life? I've known women with bulimia and so forth in real life and these things suck to deal with. However she's on this high-profile show and you'd think they would have been helping her get healthier or something. Well, not gonna wade into this too much. All in all it reminds me of the obese guy on Lost who refused to lose weight all show even though his girth made zero sense in the show's world. Well, that was way more egregious.
No sign of Silver whatsoever in the present day and that's disappointing. Silver was the best villain the show has had. Now it's Kreese and his new secret army of Koreans from his Higher Power master from 'Nam. At least the lead kid in the Korean squad is a bad-ass, but he's got basically zero character development outside of "brash".
This last tournament is the super duper world tournament but it already feels smaller than the regional tournaments in the earlier seasons. We don't know who most of them are, the winners are basically foregone already, we already know it'll come down to Sam vs Tory (again) as the final battle, and everything just looks small now (budgetary reasons I'm guessing). The total glossing over of Barcelona comes to mind.
Most of all I thought it was comical how the show did that Hollywood thing and acted like going to a non ivy league school was some kind of death sentence. Miguel might have to go to... a state school! His life is ruined! And that other kid was supposedly going to MIT but it turned out it was just a local tech school! Whatta loser!
Speaking as someone with a useless degree, trade/tech schools are probably a better bet at this point in time. Hollywood's gonna prop up that outdated narrative of "if you don't go ivy league you're nobody" though. In their world maybe it's an attainable thing for everybody, but not in the real world.
