I'm hitting core temps of 95 and am getting overheating warnings. I think the thermal paste on my desktop has finally bit it... does the stuff ever "age" and need replacement? If you're hitting that high then thermal paste is most likely the culprit. What was your application method? Did you clean off all previous paste?
Max temp before throttling is 95C. You ideally want to be 70-75. 80 and 85 is still fine honestly but above that is no bueno.
What's the rest of your case fan setup look like? What case?
I doubt you'd be auto-ocing like that, but you could look at what the CPU vcore is set. My msi uefi menu has an over clocking menu.
My guess is paste though. What brand?
Only the shittiest of pastes age in anything under 5 years, and the quality stuff can last relatively indefinitely. It certainly can't hurt to put some new stuff on while also checking other things like out dust problems or the heatsink becoming unseated, or even one of the fans outright dying
Yeah, at this point I think it's like 10 years... and I was checking the CPU fan and the heatsink just came off... I think I have the culprit then. Other biggest issue is dust for airflow, but that's more about the case and the location I think,I've repasted gpus and CPUs before after a few years and always seen good results
Well, I'm looking at probably just replacing the whole god damn thing, and setting this to a server someplace. You have dust in the case? I'd invest in a modern case with dust filters
ssds and ram is at a low now, don't be afraid to go big and use pcpartpicker like noodle said.Well, I'm looking at probably just replacing the whole god damn thing, and setting this to a server someplace.
First, any recommendations on a decent dust-filter-case?
Second, what's a decent build for a budget gaming system (<$1000)?

It'll be a point-in-time purchase, so I'll need to buy everything around the same time (or at least, not do any replacements for a while). In general, I would build around a good AMD board (AM4) and in July immediately upgrade to one of the expected 5GHz processors.

Any resources for how to properly apply thermal paste? Everything says "follow the manufacturers instruction for that chip" and I can't find anything.

Well, I trust hardware swap, and this dude had apparently sold dozens of cards before. Was a frequent seller. And a few other buyers have already posted they received and their cards work great. So honestly, I don't think it was a scam.Sounds like you got scammed. It's odd that it won't post at all even if the gpu is borked. Usually it will post and just not be able to display.
