Ok, so I've built the computer I purchased with help in the Desktop Computers thread above, and I've installed windows and a couple drivers and such. I'm wondering though, this motherboard's network drivers are installing this "Killer Network Manager" crap program that seems to be tied to its network drivers. What the fuck is this, and can I just get some network drivers that don't have this bullshit program?
I have that same thing (you must have the Fatal1ty (or however you spell it) version). I want to say I just changed one of the options in that Manager itself, or perhaps just removed it from the startup programs. Whichever, it wasn't anything special, and it no longer starts at bootup. It is not needed for anything other than checking up on your network crap...in other words, not needed at all. It isn't tied to the drivers specifically, so just turn it off somehow.

I can't manage to access any options in the manager itself, despite plenty of clicking around. And as for changing it in the startup programs, I'm a noob and don't actually remember how to access that shit in Win7.

Go to the search box and type "msconfig" then enter. Go to the startup tab and uncheck any programs you do not want to run at startup. Click Apply.

Yeah, I've been there, the Killer Network Manager crap isn't even in that list. Hence my confusion.

Then it's a service. either go in msconfig -> services -> hide all microsoft services and uncheck it there or just launch services.msc.

Just did this, set it from "Automatic" to "Disabled," and the program still appears in my system tray on start-up, but if I pull it up, it says "this service is disabled."

Granted, at this point it's just an OCD type annoyance that I can't get rid of it, but what the fuck? What magical force is keeping this thing around?

The Killer install is half driver, half service. You can't disable the driver part, clearly, or it'll stop working altogether. Your best bet, if this annoys you that much, would be to uninstall the manager software entirely and just install the driver on its own (which I seem to recall doing on my Alienware M11x).

Yeah I looked for just the driver on the MSI website. I guess I'll look around a bit harder.

Trying to overclock my QNIX to 115hz, and I have an Acer as my second monitor at 60hz. My google searches have said it is possible but Nvidia control panel keeps reverting the QNIX back to the native resolution and 60hz. Any ideas?

So after a recent incident where my wife wiped data of her phone, I've become more paranoid about backing up. I put an app on our phones to sync files to our free Google Drive storage but was starting to consider doing the same for my PC.

Currently I have a WD NAS that my computer backs up to (in the same room) but was considering going a step further and pushing files out to my Google Drive as well. I'd have to get the 1 TB plan to accommodate everything. I've got the setup planned to where I have one copy on my computer that gets backed up both the NAS and cloud. My only reservation is security. How safe is it to put any file out there? Should I make an effort to sort out and leave sensitive information off my cloud storage?

I guess this is just safeguarding me against my house being destroyed, is that a bit too paranoid?

It honestly depends on how important that data is to you. Do you really need a whole TB of data backed up? The stuff I would be really concerned about is digital pictures and video (family) that can't be replaced. That is worth the cloud storage from your PC, no doubt. Random video games and movies, etc? Not so much.

I actually just saw that you can get 1TB on Google Drive for $10 a month. That's really not bad at all.

I don't need the full TB for sure but Google drive plans jump from 100 GB to 1 TB. My pictures and videos (family movies) are pushing close to 100 GB by themselves. So if I end up with 1 TB I'd be more likely to backup all of my documents. I may just end up doing my personal media and leaving the secure stuff offline, unless there is no need to be that scared of it. I'm talking documents that have enough data to steal my identity btw.

On that same note, if I did back everything up, would encrypting sensitive docs with Windows native encryption be enough to secure them?

IIRC Windows native encryption is pretty nice, but I've never used it. I don't think there are any major security flaws with it, but I don't know enough about it.

The cloud security is great, but with it being tied to a login you'll have to consider that as a single point of failure. All someone needs is access to your google account and all of your data is at risk. I can't really recommend anything better, but I hear security is a big concern for Google Drive.

BitLocker's reasonably secure, but you'd better not lose your encryption keys or you're a thousand times hosed. Back those up, and I don't mean on a cloud storage platform.

I fear my video card may be fucked, but I thought I would post the problem here in case someone knows a way to fix it:

My Nvidia 760 GTX has recently developed problems - It's giving me error code 43 in device manager - I've tried updating and reinstalling drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling the device as well as trying a different slot in my motherboard, but if the drivers are installed, the screen resolution becomes terrible and the colours are terrible as well.

Strangely if the drivers are NOT installed, I can get limited functionality out of the device. The colours are normal, resolution works at 1280 by 1024. I cannot, however, get my second monitor to work with the device, nor can I get widescreen support, nor can I get nvidia control panel to work.

I have no other computer to test it in unfortunately. Any ideas?

I'm seeing mention on a few different sites in reference to that error code 43 that people were able to remedy it by flashing their BIOS, driver reinstalls/wipes never helped.

If nothing else, that should definitely confirm whether or not it's a hardware or software issue, if you still get the error after the bios flash, then you're hardware is probably going tits up.

Good idea, but no effect. Still the same issue.

What gets me, is why the hell is the card even working at all with no drivers installed. I should have nothing, not an almost functional card with a few (critical) features missing.

Windows has built in drivers for cards, that's probably why it is working with no drivers installed.

When you install the nVidia drivers, are you doing a Custom (Advanced) install over an Express Install. Then on the next page ticking/selecting "Perform Clean Installation" at the bottom? Restart after installing, even if it doesn't ask.

Also, just for the sake of knocking another thing off the list, is your integrated graphics disabled?
