oh, a note on durability, weapons like the Heide Greatlance break after a few enemies on 60+fps. Even if you don't hit corpses (well, at least the full hit, it feels like if you overkill by one of the hits in the combo, the lance loses a few points right there) and don't hit walls, the lance doesn't last.

So what's a good set of armor to get and upgrade for a first dark souls 2 playthrough as a typical warrior? I'm trying to avoid too many spoilers but I don't like that I am hesitant to use upgrade mats in this game because I don't know when I'll run into the next set of gear.

When you beat the pursuer theres a set of drangleic armor you can use for like, the rest of the game. Gotta jump down after the boss area and get it. You also get the drangleic 2h sword.
Get a 100% physical shield and you are basically good to go with whatever armor keeps you below 70% equipment load. Armor is hugely insignificant in DS2. I played once with Havels and the next time with Robes and it made no discernible difference.

Agreed with this. I basically used that set and the accompanying shield for the entire game. I upgraded to a purchasable armor set you get after killing a certain boss later on that's a bit heavier but looks cooler. You could beat the entire game with what Vinyard posted though. That said you can beat the game naked.. so there's that.
Just beat this game last night. I thought I was right at the end, but it turns out I needed to go to a few more places (aerie, memory, etc). Last boss was a bit of a let down, but my guy was pretty beefed up at the end anyways. Took about 3 or 4 attack sequences to kill it with my Large Club +10 hitting for about 1000-1200 per swing. Pretty lame fight, but the atmosphere was cool.
I found as I progressed through the game that it got progressively easier as far as bosses were concerned. Only a few gave me a hard time (Smelter Demon
) and a few weren't even noteworthy at all (Covetous.....). I also had the Pursuer's Sword at +5, so I could kill stuff pretty easily. In fact, after the Smelter Demon I don't think any boss killed me more than once on the way to the end. I also avoided most spoilers and boss strategies unless I was truly lost on where to go next, much better than my DS1 experience. 9/10 rating from me.
Game is still game of the year for me (so far), really enjoyed it. I NG+ immediately, but not sure I'll get around to playing it. My brother lent me GTA5 so my fate is sealed.
Drangleic armor is great in the beginning, but it takes twinkling titanite to upgrade. This spreadsheet is about 99% accurate, and allows you to plan out a kit and manage weight:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...Wc&usp=sharing

I don't really see how a person in their first run through could properly use that spreadsheet to plan their armor. But I'm not trying to plan the most efficient path, I was just looking for a good first set you find early on to run with and spend titanite on.
I liked using havol boots/gloves and then the black robes from the cypt/hexer head (couldn't find a prisoner's face wrap).
It's fashion souls afterall, fuck actual poise and armor.
