Watching my stepdad deteriorate so quickly is getting scary. Too much to get into, but any time my mom is around him I feel she's pretty much in mortal danger. He talks about death/suicide all the time, he's on a cocktail of pain meds and alcohol and is barely coherent, and on top of that he rants about paranoid doomsday shit all the time. (which started back when he took a job basically helping this rich guy build his fucking bunker)
He can barely walk when sober from the pain so the difference between "normal" and shitfaced is nearly indistinguishable.

Marijuana. Has the same self-confidence boosting and social aspects of alcohol without the slurred speech, stumbling, or wanting to piss on furniture. You might just talk a little slower. You don't feel unintelligent as you might when drinking one too many... and, hurr hurr, people might say stoners act retarded but when compared to a drunk you'll seem like a god damn Einstein.
I think what I really need is to try some kind of psychedelics.

The effects of pot vary widely from one person to another. Personally pot makes me less confident and less social in most situations. And I definitely feel dumber when I'm high.
I also like how people always compare marijuana to being off-your-ass drunk. It is possible to have a few beers to loosen up without throwing a lampshade on your head.

It does make me a little more social. But I think that's probably less an effect of the drug and more the situation in which the drug is used.

I did that once, followed by outpatient therapy stuff. It didn't help at all for myself (which in no way means it won't for someone else).
