I paid about $2100 and got 32 gbs of ram, a 3070 and an extra 1tb SSD I bought myself, not to mention other name brand shit like MSI Mo bo, Cooler master 240mm AIO...etc... and this was at the height of video cards being $1500-$2000( because I had to buy pre built at the time to even get one). I would seriously consider building yourself today.

Thinking of going Linux for a new HTPC build since win10+ does nothing but annoy me. I know nvidia has good driver support but how is Intel integrated GPU support in Linux? Thinking of getting an i3-12100 which has igpu hardware support for 4k/60 h265 decoding and HDCP 2.2 etc. Needs to do streaming services and local file playback only, no gaming.

Also any distro recommendations? Needs to just boot and not annoy me with constant popups or updates when I just want to watch something.

I don't know shit about Linux, but if you're using an intel iGPU for transcoding and such, that means you need Intel quick sync support. It looks like there is support for it on Linux as a quick search brought this up: IntelQuickSyncVideo - Ubuntu Wiki

I use a NUC as a Plex server, though I stuck with W10. It looks like you can run Linux on one as well.

I have the following system currently:

EDIT - (Actually have 16gb ram, and a slightly different 1080p 144hz monitor than I listed).

I'm looking at doing some upgrading soon, and was thinking about the following parts:

Try hunting around for a good 5700X or 5800X combo. 8 cores is kinda important for some things.

my prime day purchases was a bunch of echo stuff and also a bequiet silent 700, while the htpc is no where loud, i can still hear it and i snagged a 3800x for 150, sure it's not a 5800x but it's still a top tier cpu, too lazy to swap out the 2600 in there

Just wait - new gen comes in 2-3 months so older stuff prices will drop even more - also even if skimping aim for some bdie ram - atleast some good 3200CL14s

so this bequiet case is a nice thick boi case and theres no audible difference when i turn it on beyond an electric hum when i turn it on, virtually silent w/ bequiet 140mm fans, bequiet dark pro cpu and seasonic psu.

I ended up going with this. I couldn't justify the 8 core CPU at this time, and it still leaves me an in socket upgrade if I want one in the future.

CPU $238 CAD
MB $199 CAD
RAM $100 CAD
AIO $0 CAD

I felt the 5600 was pretty nice. It's basically 5600x level, only 1% less performance, and was substantially cheaper.

I also sold some old components to a guy building his kid his first PC, so all told I spent like $65 in the end.

Big Ryzen sale on until Aug 6th.

Now the 5600 is another $54 off, and the 5600x is $238. :(

IDK what you will be using this PC for but I think its kinda mistake to go for 6 core vs 8 these days. Especially for gaming because all new consoles have the 8 core std now so most game publishers will def be utilizing those cores more and more as we go forward. IMO 8 core minimum going forward. If not for gaming then do whatever the fuck.

BTW I see the 5800x for $289 and the 5600x for $189

AMD dropped 22.7.1 today, which contains OpenGL improvements for the entire product stack from the RX 6000s back to Polaris.

Not many games running OGL these days (Minecraft, Team Fortress, Sims 4, Owlboy, Bioshock, Ren'PY visual novels, various older games, and possibly emus), but in the games that do use it, the uplift is pretty dramatic - AMD noted a 75% improvement in Minecraft at 4k.

Unfortunately, the DX11 optimizations from the last driver are still RX 6000 series only.
