So I was doing some research and I think doing all of the quests in act 2 is a bad idea. The completionist in my wanted to, but it sounds like I'm going to incredibly overleveled for just about everything.

I'm almost level 15 and just finishing up the stuff on the east side of Driftwood. I did a little in the cemetery, but it's looking like I'll be 17 by the time I start act 3.

Fuck not having thievery on a second playthrough, is the solution to just murder everyone till you find the keys you need? I don't have enough +thievery gear to open most quest door/cellars

Tried Alice at level 13.
sent my "main" forward alone.
cast rain for wet on her/self.. 900 vit, +armor of frost for 890 magic armor.
24 wit
15% fire resist.

Persuasion success even.

Alice goes first. cast burning anger on cass.
Cass was hit for 988 damage.
Alice has killed cass.
Cass was hit for 1089 damage.
Alice has killed cass.
Cass was hit for 132 fire surface damage.
Alice has killed cass.

uh.. ok..

Bunch of attempts. got her. more hilarious, mostly brute forced it. made all sorts of plans. spread out, had summon incarnate out and ready... removed all water spells and replaced with multiple heals, to nuke her with heals..
she shit on all the plans, ignored my even MORE buffed main char/talker, with over 1k magic armor, 30% fire resist, 29wit.. instant gibbed the summoner.
but still, allowed me to teleport her against a wall, stuck in place between rogue/war. who double teamed her, and chain CC'd her. (even battling ram on my water mage.)
rogue dropped once, so had to burn 2 res, and a ton of healing potions..

Also, when she was at 200 life or so.... I used bless on the fire... derp..
Which.. blessed her. removing the pain shackles.. And made the fire healing fire.. which healed me, and hurt her... /facepalm.

Beat the game on Tactician... Depending on how you talk, the final fight can either be 'Huh. That was pretty challenging' or 'WTF HOW DO I NOT DIE INSTANTLY?!'

Arx is really, really, really unpolished compared to the rest of the game. So many quests/events that do not make any sense, lots of bugs (Hi Necrofire in walls! /wrist), and the traders do not seem to restock nearly as well as they do in Fort Joy or Reaper's Coast. My BIGGEST complaint is that the game seems capped at 18. You can continue to level past there, but all of the gear dropped by NPCs and most of it found by Lucky Charm were level 18. Which means I had to constantly visit vendors again and again to get level (22) proper gear.

Game is a solid 8.5/10. If Arx had the polish of the earlier acts, it would be a 9.5/10.

Still the best CRPG I have played since Fallout: New Vegas. And the best turn based one since BG2:ToB.

Going to take a break for a few weeks, then probably come back to try a Duo Lone Wolf run on the Ironman mode.

shriekers...

past act 1, is there a way an obvious way to get through these guys other than brute force? sacrifice one character while the other one source vampires them? i feel like i'm missing something simple

Yea it's very good overall besides my UI issues with it, but even in the early areas some of the dialogue is... well I won't say lazy due to the complexity of it all but perhaps poorly directed/written given the circumstances that they weren't tracking 100% of character interactions. For instance, if you go into Fort Joy and skip the Dallis interaction, there are a few dialogue interactions where you say shit like 'I've seen her in action!'. No you haven't. Also you can apparently talk to people about Griff without ever learning about him yet.

If you have a summoner, you can send your summoned mob in to eat the attack, then Vamp it. Alternatively, you can sometimes sneak up close enough to cast Source Vampirism on them before they can nuke you.

I am pretty sure there is a way to get the dragon to kill all of the Shriekers for you, at least there was at some point in the beta for Act 1, but I have yet to have it happen in the live version.

yeah, the dragon said he'd help but i haven't seen him do anything. all the shriekers in act 1 were still around. is he supposed to take care of all of them in the game?

Cannot find any posts about it after release, but yeah, in the pre-release of the game, setting the dragon free had him kill the Shriekers before the final area. Have gone through it three times now and he does jack. Just says he will help and then flies off. Might be a bug, might be doing something out of order. Not sure.

The purging wands can be cast from outside of combat range

I think this game highlights the problem with older quest systems. I'm routinely stumbling into quest updates with nothing behind the quest being explained. I cleared out some cavern of void beasts and dwarves while activating a bunch of updates about Deathfog and Peacemakers with nothing explaining what they are or how they relate to the story.

can you even find any purging wands after act 1? i used up all the charges and tossed mine

You can in some areas, but after Act 1, multiple classes have summon spells (Geomancer and Pyromancy both have one that takes a Source Point, Necromancy has Bone Widow and Bloated Corpse), Necromancer skills like 'Living on the Edge', and so on. So Purging Wands are not super important. Plus, there are a total of maybe 8 Shriekers after Fort Joy.

Big spoilers for ending battle...

If you AGREE to sacrifice yourself, you have to fight Rex+Kraken (who summons 2-3 Adds EACH turn that are level 20), which is do-able, as you have Dallis, Lucian, etc on your side. If you REFUSE, you have to fight fucking everyone. I have no idea how to do it. I have been trying for close to 6 hours now - luckily, I made a save right before the 'point of no return', but I cannot figure out how to do it without being gibbed on turn three or four.

Seems the only way people reliably do it on Tactician/Honour mode is to cheese it 4x Melee/Rangers and TP Rex into the center of your party and hope you can 1-Round him. Doing it with a mixed party is... rough.

I spent the time during the first stage to kill off as many of Lucian's adds as I could. Rex didn't do his big reveal until after I had nearly killed Dallis. At that point I pretty much focused down Rex. Once he was down the Kraken goes away and you just have to deal with Lucian, Dallis and the adds the Kraken spat out. I got a bit lucky on my fight because Lucian and Dallis mostly focused on the Black Ring and left me alone except for the rare pot shot.

Managed to finally get it down after so many attempts. Just 'got lucky' as well. Lucian finally went after someone other than my casters - Dallis was still a douche. Just kept spitting lightning balls at my group, but at least she mostly frelled off to fight the Kraken. Still seems like it is mostly a DPS race, not a control sort of fight. >_> I may have tried to kill the Kraken quite a few times - Even without being an idiot, this fight is difficult on Tactician and I am not looking forward to it on my Honour/Lone Wolf run.

It's actually easy with a Lone Wolf party. You have more AP to work with, and less targets that can get attacked, so you just spend your first turn running. Teleport someplace, move some, go invis, wait it out while Rex/Dallis etc all duke it out for a bit. That's a lot harder to do on 4 characters with only 4AP each.

Fighting the whole pile of them at once was definitely a real pain in the dick. I eventually did it by forcing Rex to transform instantly, leaving the max number of people alive when he did it, then just play run and hide for a round or two while the chaos ensues. Rex+leviathan eventually won and killed lucian/dallis etc, so I just had to mop up what was left of him and his adds after like 5 or 6 rounds of everyone slaughtering each other
