So i've been wanting to get into Doctor Who for a while now, but where do I start? considering this show has been on for ..what well over 50 years now?(1963 to present?), i really don't think I could stomach going that far back, so how far back *should* I go and where do I start?
Just watch the reboot, start at either S1 (Christopher Eccelston) or S2(S1 Christmas Special?) (David Tennant). Then go back and watch specific important lore things from the old seasons if you like, such as Genesis of the Daleks (but you don't need to).

Starting with old episodes is madness.

TBH, go back to any doctor's first episode if you want to test the waters and see if you'll like the show. I started with ecclestone's doctor. Tennet's would be good too.

After that, consider going back and watching the older stuff.
I would agree with this. Doctor Who Series One. Parts of it are a little campy but there is some good story and you get introduced to Capt. Jack which will open up Torchwood to you. Tennant is a great doctor and I really like Matt Smith, but each season kind of plays off the previous ones (i.e. River Song). Personally I wouldn't watch Series 2 without watching Series 1 because Rose's Character with Tennant makes more sense when you take in her relationship with Christopher Eccleston. The different wikis out there are good for leaning about the older series if you have questions, and some PBS stations in the US show the 4th and 5th Doctor series if you don't want to buy/download them.

I'm not a diehard Whovian, but I do enjoy the series and watched it as a kid.

My take would be to start with the reboot (Ecclestone) and keep going to present. You don't need to know very much. Daleks are big tank things bent on the destruction of anything not Dalek. They say "Exterminate! Exterminate!" Cybermen are big robot dudes bent on the destruction of anything not Cyberman, they say, "You will be upgraded". And... well, that's about it really. Oh yeah. Expect to see London a lot. I mean a LOT. And the Tardis is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

If you get all the way up to present and enjoyed the way the show can be entertainingly goofy and over the top with moments of genuine sentiment and occasionally thoughtful go back and watch the older ones. It's mostly more of the same with a lower budget and some popular references that you probably won't get.

i can see rose with eccelstone more than i can see her with tennant (even though i think tennant was banging her IRL). eccelstone had a bigger presence on screen.

the first season of the reboot is really hit or miss, but there are so many important things that happen in that season that you really do need to start with it. just know that when you get to the episodes with the fart monsters and game shows and patch of skin villains that it does vastly improve.

The episode "Dalek" was good in S1. Always fun to see the Doctor lose his shit.

I started with season one of New Who and when I got into the show I started watching Classic Who on Netflix Instant. Started with Spearhead From Space (Pertwee's first serial) and then went through the rest of the stuff until I had to go to the DVDs on Netfilx. Classic Who doesn't have may multi-serial story arcs (only 2 come to mind: Key to Time and Trial of a Timelord), so jumping around doctors and serials was easy to do without missing stuff. New Who has callbacks to Classic Who, but its easy to understand and those episodes are available on Netflix or DVD.

PBS doesnt show it anymore, at least my PBS doesnt. It used to.

Fart monsters were awesome.

The only ecclestone episode that I actually just skipped through to see if it got interesting was the one with the blobmonster. The one where all the Dr. Who Nerds came together in their secret society, formed a rock and roll band, and got eaten.

That one was way too meta and dry for me. But I'm American.. and tbh, nothing beats a good fart joke except maybe a good dick joke. The British humour sensibilities really shone through with blobmonster.

isnt that the one from season 2? so much weird shit happens in that episode. rose's mom tries to hook up with that kid and she finds out he just wants dr who info and she gets all butthurt tells rose and she goes to bitch him out? then the dude's gf gets turned into an eyes and mouth and makes a little joke about still having sex meaning blowjobs i guess. there is a lot of silliness in season 2, but its not as bad as season 1. but season one has one of the scariest episodes after Blink. the one with the kid in the gas mask looking for his mummy is creepy as fuck.

hmm, ok i'll start w/ s1 with ecclestone then to get a feel for the current gen lead in. I'm okay with a bit of campy, i mean i watched Merlin which was quite bad and managed to trudge through, i'm sure I can manage through fart monsters and the like

Anyone watch the specials they are showing in the lead up? "Tales from the Tardis" and "The Science of Doctor Who". About 25 minutes into the science special, Charles Dance is shown twice in the crowd. He is either a big fan of science or a DW fan, or both. Surprised he hasnt made a cameo yet.

Something fun pre-DotD: This is how Ron Grainger was going to arrange the theme before it got handed to the Radiophonic Workshop & Delia Darbyshire -

Charles Dance wouldn't surprise me. If you lived in Britain in the 70s there's about an 81.227895% chance you are a Doctor Who fan

wow.

Yeah, I think going experimental with it was a much better call than going full-on disco.

Edit: There are a couple of sections of the disco version that are pretty catchy though. I didn't know the theme had been written and then re-arranged. I always thought that the electronica version was the first and final.
