As a complete noob in the world of MOBAs, I just recently started playing LOL because my brother in law plays and it's fun to play games with people. Then my OCD kicks in and I start looking around. God forbid I just enjoy a night of playing video games.
Can someone tell me what the differences are between DOTA2 and LOL and why Agonizing is calling me a noob for playing LOL? I have no paid any attention to this genre so I don't know it's history other than seeing videos of the original Dota.
Just trying the straighten out the genre in my brain and I figured it easier to ask then spend 6 hours on google figuring shit out.
LoL and HoN are as different as DOTA and HoN.
Going off of what Pyros was saying LoL is a much simpler game compared to dota, there's not as much depth or complexity, which results in a lower skill cap to master.
Some of the major differences between LoL and DOTA:
Last hitting: in DOTA you rely on your auto attack, your characters animation, turn rate, missile travel speed where as in LoL very early in the game is the only time auto attacking is when you last hit, later on the spell cost is massively reduced and you can use your spells easily without worry to clear waves.
Death: Dying in DOTA you lose gold, a lot of it. You can lose up yo 700 and some change, don't know the number off the top of my head for every death and every subsequent death after that. If you die with a killing spree you give the person that killed you more gold than just a normal death. League you die you lose no gold, just time spent lost not gaining experience and every death after that gives less gold to the enemy team so you don't feed as hard if you suck.
Courier: DOTA has a courier which carries your items to a fro the shop. If the enemy kill the courier it will respawn in 3 minutes and if there were items on the courier you can't loot them until it revives, furthermore the enemy team gains 170 gold each when the courier dies (the first time) any time after that only the courier killer gets the gold. League has no courier feature.
Teleporting: DOTA has teleport scrolls that allow you to teleport to any friendly structure at the cost of 135 gold and 75 mana (with a 65 second CD). If multiple targets are porting in to a place the cast time is increased by 1 second. IE if you and I both TP to mid, you TP will be 3 seconds mine will be 4 seconds you can channel this while being attacked and it's broken via stun/imprisonment/somerootsandothershit. League uses "b" which just teleports you to home at no cost and is broken on damage.
Items: DOTA incorporates many more clickable item affects such as things like "Mask of Madness" which will increase your attack speed but also increase your damage taken. League has some of these but no where near the amount of DOTA.
Someone mentioned already heroes are free. But one thing to keep in mid is League has "Tanks" which are heroes that are purely for soaking damage and distracting enemies, these are Strength carries in DOTA they do actual damage as well as being tanky. They're not just meat shields, they will fuck your shit up if they get fed, unlike in LoL.
Abilities: DOTA's abilities are not meant to be spammed for benefit, the majority of them are very impactful and do good damage and cost a heavy resource so they cannot be spammed. This is the opposite of LoL which has low damaging low cast abilities with low cooldowns, also LoL has items that reduce cooldowns and increase damage of abilities where this is only limited to 1 or 2 items in DOTA that don't directly increase the spell damage or reduce cool down rather they incorporate different factors which do this (like an AOE 20% Magic Resist reduction).
As someone who played the shit out of LoL and then moved to DOTA2 when I got an invite a couple years ago. DOTA is much harder and more intricate. In my opinion it's more satisfying of a game to play and takes more skill to be good at.
Take a look here if you want to give DOTA a try, this is heralded as the best user guide :
