So, I picked this up at a whim. Had it wishlisted I think since it was shown at summer game fest perhaps?
No early access, just the full game. Currently at overwhelmingly positive on steam.
First review I saw on steam pretty much nailed it. It is Gothic 2d. I am 9 hours in, and it is fantastic. Hardly scratched the surface of it, so I assume it is big.
Copy from another review "Drova – Forsaken Kin is a brutal ARPG set in a unique and grim setting that certainly took this reviewer by surprise. With a surprising amount of depth beneath the surface, this semi-open world RPG has much to offer, so long as its inherent difficulty doesn’t put you off."
I do get the "you died" screen a lot, but since it lets you save anywhere (at least on regular difficulty), you can get away with trying things. Mobs kill you real fast, but when you get gear, you notice even small bonuses like +5 armor or a few + attacks on your weapon.
You start off and get a map like a toddler drew it, but soon find another one that sells a better one. Can then buy ink which lets you mark stuff on it, which is a nice touch. You're not zoned off on where to explore so much by walled off content, rather than being oneshot. Though at the beginning nearly everything does. Much like Gothic, you need to talk to people, train skills, stats, abilities (they upgrade too, like you can learn to skin animals, then gut them, then even another skill (each giving more items). Several weapons, and magic as well (though only found scrolls so far, there is a "mind" stat but only seen melee trainers). I tend to find a rock, then dodge around it and hitting enemies.
A+ recommendation for me so far.
