Similar story with EQ, tbh. First cannbalized its audience with EQ2 then used its revenue to fund other games.

It's a shame too because EQ1 had more of an audience and more cultural relevance than any of their other stuff.

Don't know a lot about Black Desert but seems like it's big on mobile?
Black Desert has carved out a nice little niche for itself. The game has never been OMEGA huge like WoW or FF14, but it has always had an extremely stable playerbase and has definitely stood the test of time - especially in the "modern" MMO era. It shows you just how far good gameplay/combat can take you, even in a Korean grinder.

It also shows that you don't have to be some 300 million sub juggernaut to be successful in the space. Which is something Shawn Lord has been saying for a while now. Hopefully the "WoW model" dies with Riot's MMO.

One or the devs that used to post here said DCUO was actually their biggest money maker

That was backed up in the earnings report or whatever where they mentioned EQ3, though they also said EQ1 is still their most steady income I believe.

Do they call it "Everquest" not Eq3?

Do they then name the other two "EQ and Eq2 classic?"

Well, at least it's something new to talk about.

That might have been ideal if Brad were still around. Acquire Pantheon and properly fund it, while also integrating the IP into it and allowing Brad to really re-create EQ in a modern game.

I was talking about the EQ IP not too long go and I really wondered, what IS the EQ IP?

When I think about IP I think about "Lore" with WoW specifically the backlog of "Lore" they created in Warcraft strat games prior to WoW release.

What is the EQ IP? The lore is so basic that you could argue that any fantasy based genre pushed with a decent gameplay model would be almost the same. Most of what drives EQ is the connection to Pen and Paper RPG ideals of enter dungeons, do things, receive items with the gameplay loop just a quicker version of a tabletop RPG experience.

What is the magic mix of EQ that makes its IP unique?

The lore became a lot more solidified in EQ2 (even though it was a different timeline). I think the biggest value of the EQ IP comes from the iconic characters. Lucan, Antonia Bayle, Firiona Vie, Mayong Mistmoore, Nagafen, etc. Maybe people don't know Firiona Vie by name but everyone has seen her key art done by Larry Elmore.

Stench Stench Thank you for sharing ... that is not an easy video to find.

I think it's really going to come down to who is hired for Creative Director - Darkpaw Games. We'll have to see what is shared in the Producer's Letter over the coming year. Do you hire someone that has worked on EQ1, EQ2, EQOA, EQNext, etc. in the past? Or do you go for new blood? (Elden Ring?)

I would like to see Darkpaw Games take note of what Games Workshop does with their IP's. Plenty of room for a Black Library style publisher to expand and deepen all the lore surrounding EverQuest. Miniatures is another area that could be developed to enhance the franchise.

Doubt the lore has anything to do with it. I couldn't tell you anything more than the name of a few characters and maybe a sentence about them. It's mostly about name recognition + nostalgia + "that one thing that used to be really popular."

I think the most valuable parts of EQ's lore have to do with memorable zones, NPCs, items and quests.

Keith Parkinson's art is fantastic! But if we're talking about brand recognition among normies, it's gonna be from the guy who did the cover for the red box.
Literally no one thinks of Everquest and thinks of that version.
