Top guilds are usually defined by their ability to accomplish two things, clear content first and monopolize available content. The speed you are able to clear content defines your ability to get a server first. Doing it as fast as possible is a natural progression from this point.
The thing is TLP servers have no competition and really they never have. Sleeper/Combine were barely progression servers and deciding who was the best came down to which guild used the better MQ2 compile at the time. In all subsequent TLP servers the server was over before launch. "Top Guild" advertised, people saw it and most serious players joined it. The alternatives were either casual guilds or the one guild ran by a guy who is on a 19 year losing streak.
What I'm getting at here is that becoming the "Top Guild" on a TLP server is a foregone conclusion. Weeks before launch everyone knows who will be the top guild, they will never face any serious existential competition and they will only fail as a result of internal issues like loot drama, leadership turnover or massive attrition.
Since server firsts are automatic, the only motivation I can find to push my players and continue leading guilds on these servers is just to try to do it faster than the last time. I don't fool myself into believing anyone else cares about that. I care about it, it's what motivates me personally, it's just a goal I have for myself which I then impose upon my guilds.
I applaud you guys who can go into every new TLP server with no other goal other than beating the same content, and beating the same guild that you've beaten on repeat for the last 11 years. Personally, I need to create additional goals for myself to stay motivated and to really enjoy these.
