Couple of things could've happened. Raid leader/warrior were doing "grey area" shit like boxing more than the weird Aradune limit or using Show EQ. This is most likely. Second is that some shitlords got pissed at literally any little thing like taking a mob, taking a camp, talking shit on the forums, etc and they got mass reported by an entire guild. Has happened to us several times. Third is the VPN thing. We've had people using VPN get suspended, but I'd be more suspicious of the first two options, most likely the first with Show EQ or just boxing 3 characters total.

I think there's just about zero chance that Show EQ is the culprit. So many people use it that it would make no sense to just randomly pick one out of a thousand people to ban for it.

Oh, thousands use it and people do get banned. Sometimes the GM's do sting operations to get some easy bans. For instance you may be running through West Karana and see Rallos Zek on SEQ off to the side. You run over there and look around where there's seemingly nothing for a few minutes. Then you're suspended. It happens.
That said, yes, 1000's use SEQ probably and your chances of being banned without it being glaringly obvious is low, but anyone with a vendetta and a recording program can send anyone they want to the gulag.

Guilds always have and always will.
I remember the Gates of Discord era ban waves hit so many people after they brought on their new "anti-cheat specialist" that they had to quietly rescind a shitload of them in order to retain any sense of an active playerbase.
People were all over forums and in the chat channels talking about being falsely banned and nobody cheats in their guild like at all ever omg, and its like, hey, fucker, the guy I trade DVD rips for my MQ compiles does them for at least a few people in your guild.

Yeah we've had people in our guild doing shit beyond like just ShowEQ. Very few, but it has happened. We told them stop it or they're out. And they were out. Some people want to play a game by not actually playing a game. They were usually average or worse players, too. Kind of like the people who use aimbots in FPS games.
ShowEQ who the fuck cares. Personally I wish it was totally cleared so I could use it on raids and figure out where some clueless idiots are and help get them to where they need to go. I've gotta CTRL F and look at my map like a sucker.

The most obvious form of it on any server is hate farming in classic. You would always see enchanter/cleric duo's farming trash mobs, and pulling them on spawn.

At this point, I don't know why people aren't running ShowEQ, especially with the windows client.
Lets say you don't even use it for cheating, you leave up rare mobs and only go where you intended to go from the time of zoning in.
You can see who is trying to grief your camp before they even get to your camp. There have been times I watch EQ babies rolling into a camp with mobs in tow and react accordingly.
The only shitty part is you can't record it and send it in as proof of training. If I could...

Impossible to track unless you are behaving obviously like mentioned above.
Had a few people I play with casually mention using it in voice coms and I'm like...bruh you shouldn't be telling people this stuff...

Bobby has been the victim of 2 false flag petition campaigns due to his stream. One was for playing a halfling in a group of halflings, and they actually hit him for it even though it was very obviously not a case of multiboxing. Dozens of people sent in petitions on his behalf screaming bloody murder and GM abuse etc. He also had people petition him when he set up a sound macro jokingly referencing SEQ whenever you said the name of someone who grabbed a TA and promptly quit on Selo.
As a result, the GMs at this point are probably EXTREMELY hesitant to ban bobbybick based on accusations made about something seen on his twitch stream. They won't make that mistake again.
