Never watched these so decided to d/l 1 - 5, and currently in the middle of 2. What the fuck happened? I mean Fast 1 wasn't Academy material or anything but it was what it was. This is a train wreck. Definitely looking forward to the others based on the rankings some people have thrown out (and the fact this series has gone 6 movies), but this is going to be tough to get through. There has to be a story behind what happened between the first, second, and rest of the series. Will investigate post marathon....

It's been a while, but iirc Vin was asked to come back for 2 and declined. And I think they already had the script and had to do a major rewrite. Think he decided to do XXX instead. No, not porn.

Oh shit XXX, completely forgot about that movie. Need to d/l that too and do a rewatch, never saw XXX 2 with Ice Cube though.

FF2 was by far the worst in the series. FF3: Tokyo Drift, is the most different from the rest, but I felt a pretty solid movie.

Who woulda bet 12 years ago, this will go down as one of the most successful movie series of all time.

I maintain that Tokyo Drift is a bit lame, but that there something very enjoyable about it taking the age old dance movie formula (success through hybridization - in dance movies it's classical with street, here us cars with japanese cars) to deliver a surprisingly positive message. I guess at that point Justin Lin, with a background in indie movies about identity and integration, still cared. Now it's all jarring one liners and fan service with no care at all for reckless endangerment or mass casualties. It manages to be entertaining, but it's a pretty dumb and ugly object.

Given that it's an action movie I'd say that the main characters did a pretty ok job of ensuring the audience knew that they were concerned about the public welfare concerns that the tank presented. If you're speaking strictly on principle that these movies tend to disregard the secondary victims, well, that's just the nature of the beast. I don't think these would sell hundred of millions of dollars worth of tickets if half the movie was Vin Diesel crying about all the people he should've been able to save ifonly he had done XYZ.

I don't feel they did such an ok job, considering Letty is slightly miffed that her boss is slaughtering dozens of people because 'why not' and that Dom's plan involve setting a cable across the highway. To be fair, they do react and mention it (and Lin adds shots of people exiting their vehicles), but that came a bit after I asked myself 'are we going to pretend these cars are empty?'

It's strange in a way, because I don't remember being bothered by that in the other three I saw (3,4,5), maybe because most of the chases/races in these movies happen in controlled environments (I can only remember the safe-pulling scene in... 5? as an exception). Here you have a mid-town chase, a mid-town race, a highway battle and it starts with a guy playing daredevil with his mate on his way to the birth of his first child... there is stylization, there is over the top and then there is that...

Just saw this and will say its probably my favorite... although its been a long while since I've seen the first one, so might have to rewatch that before making my final call. Thought this movie had a nice blend of everything, even if some of the action was over the top^2. I actually thought 5 was odd. I'd say up till then, it was the best 'movie' of the bunch, but the worst FF. It didn't have much in the way of car chases or races. Hell, they even had them go to a street race, set up for a race, and then not show it, skipping to the end to show the winner. This time around it had all the character of 5, with actual car chases thrown in, and (as far as I could tell) minimal CGI work. After 5 I was a bit nervous about this one, but I think they have finally nailed it with 6, and I look forward to them tweaking it more with 7th.

He didn't decline, he really, really wanted to do it. The story is actually told in Pitch Black, on the audio commentary. It's been a few years so I'm paraphrasing....

Diesel had XXX, but was heavily invested in F&F so he asked his buddy (the villain from Pitch Black) to take his place in the Fast and Furious sequel. He shows up and they tell him "you're the bad guy. You're playing a white Hispanic drug lord". And he said he wanted to punch Vin Diesel in the face when he saw him again as he thought he was literally taking Diesel's spot as a good guy. They both had a good laugh about it. I thought it was pretty funny.

They were mentioned briefly, talking about how they lost their money from F&F5 playing roulette in Monte Carlo. I didn't catch why that stopped them from coming back though.

Also, 5>6>3>4>1>>>>>2.
Just finished 5 now and having not seen 6 think I have to agree with Vorph's rating of them. That vault car chase shit was just ridiculously crazy, kudos to whoever dreamed that up and the executed it on film. And yeah, in the montage the Brazilian dude's let it all ride on roulette and it kind of cut right at the very end as the ball fell, I just kind of assumed they lost everything.

2 was absolute horseshit.

I hated all the "Bro's" and stupid fucking 1 liners between the two main guys.
