I totally forgot about crossplay integration. I was looking for tips to setup the PS4, but I’m not sure there’s much you can do apparently outside of the default options which is severely hurting my ability to really get into this game. Still trying though. Good so far, if tedious. By far the best on the market I’ve played so far and I’ve tried damn near all of them recently.

I just went through and bought a mouse keyboard combo for the PS4. Setting up the base UI is by far easier using a mouse. The game is completely playable with the controller though, so dont get discouraged about using it. You can map several trigger buttons to use a laundry list of abilities if you desire with a controller. Watch the "How-To's" on the User Interface. If you want a good idea of what's possible with it, graphically, then check out the PS4 streams of ffxiv. Some of the ways people have made their UI's look with just the standard UI will impress you. I just hate how ignorant targeting is with a controller. Even after setting up the priority lists - it seems like it always targets the worst possible choice at the worst possible time. I'm sure my targeting list just needs more refinement in options- but that is like my only chief complaint when I play the game on my PS4.

But I generally just play the game on the PC with mods - though technically not allowed, I havent found where anyone has gotten in trouble from UI altercations that are as simple as color/style. Girlfriend plays the game on the PS4 and loves using the controller more than the mouse/kb combo. To each their own I guess.

Yeah if you really hate the controller, can always buy some random mouse/keyboard USB shit and it'll work like PC. But you can customize the UI a lot to make it easy to keep track of stuff and have access to all your buttons. You have access to R1 bar, L1 bar, R1 > L1 bar, L1 > R1 bar, R1 > R1 bar and L1 > L1 bars if you activate all of them, which is 48buttons, way more than you'd ever need even on Scholar. You can also still rotate bars if needed and or use macros to do different stuff(like R1 > Circle will change to another bar, then R1 > Circle to change back using macros instead of the normal way to change bars and so on).

You can slap some normal hotbars on your screen and rescale them to keep track of cooldowns of important shit separately from the bars too.

The only issue I had with controller play was placing ground aoes, it's not so bad if you just want to place them in front of you or if it's the type you'll always target at something(like Salted Earth can be targetted at enemies, generally it'll be more than fine this way) just annoying if you're doing a mechanic as scholar and want to drop a soil on top of the raid while moving away or whatever, but this is super niche and you can generally work around it by dropping it earlier or making a macro to drop it on your co healer if it's a consistent mechanic(target one healer to do some shit while the rest of the raid takes heavy damage, so you either soil on the ground when the other healer is targetted, or soil on the other healer when you're targetted). But not even every class has these, it's mostly only DRK, SCH, WHM and AST now I think?

Anyway game is definitely playable with a pad, you'll see world first kills with people playing pads all the time.

This precisely.

It takes some effort to setup everything to be more user friendly on the PS4, but after you get it all configured the way you want it, it's great.

I play on the PS4 with controller, but I have a mouse and keyboard hooked up to the PS4 for chatting and such. I would say that mouse and keyboard is a must even you play on PS4.

Thanks for the tips and reassurance. I spent about two full hours (maybe more lol) going through every single option and customizing every single thing and it is way easier now. It was the first thing I did when I loaded the game, however some options didn’t quite make sense until you get farther in and understand mechanics and play style. One of the things that was hindering me massively was the fact that there is a completely separate option that was incredibly hard to see (my text was small and transparent by default on my TV) for a HUD Layout screen, to be able to move and drag bars completely separate from all the other options and I had no idea it existed. None of the official websites and stuff about UI mentioned it in the sections I was looking so I was really thinking that everyone I saw with good looking UIs had just used a mouse to get it there which is not the case! It’s actually amazingly well done how they allow you to do everything with a controller once you spend some time figuring everything out. Granted I don’t think I would spend hours and hours customizing most games just for the options, but this game has hooked me in a way an MMO hasn’t been able to in years so I really wanted to put in the effort. I was able to change all the tooltips and windows and text sizes, etc. something that was hindering my gameplay was all the item windows being in weird spots across the TV (I’m on an 80 inch, so lots of space) and like font size 12 so I had to constantly crank my neck and squint and still couldn’t see shit, lol.

Thanks everyone. I should be able to make some progress now.

Also, I have a really nice Razer keyboard I used for communicating which has been nice but I’ll probably spend a few bucks to get a decent mouse and see if it’s like being on a mini PC. Haven’t used mouse Kb on PS4 before but everyone says it’s pretty much the same as PC, so that’s cool.

PS4 keyboard lag is a killer for me. I have not found a way to get rid of it completely.

Yeah the base UI is, imo, really fucking good, lots of options, can do a lot of things. They slowly improve on it(they added Alpha scaling not too long ago so you can make shit a bit transparent so it's not as bad looking when showing big icons for cooldowns or whatever for example) and it's really powerful overall, but it requires quite a lot of effort to figure out all the many many options. There's so many fucking options, and they're not even organized properly most of the time. You have a UI subcategory but there's plenty of UI related options in other places too, hell there's some shit that I think should be character option but are in system options(for example disabling mount BGM in favor of keeping the zone BGM, that's in the System > Sounds options even though I feel it should probably be in the Gameplay options).

And yeah didn't mention HUD Layout even though I usually do, it's something you can entirely miss since it's not within the options themselves but has its own category. And it comes with a ton of things you can do too, you can click elements and get sub options for them that aren't displayed elsewhere and some are super useful like being able to split the buff/debuff bar into multiple bars so you can organize them differently.

Like many XIV things, it improved a lot over time but it's stuff added on top of other stuff and it can be pretty confusing and daunting for new players. There's still a few things they could do better and that's why on PC people have some mods but overall they do a great job adding stuff.

If you want another random system that you probably won't hear from the game or anywhere else unless you look for it: typing /gpose will open a pretty indepth system to take cool screenshots. You can set the time, freeze frames on your movements, change camera angles, create lightning, apply various filters and so on. It repreats the last animation you did before using it so you can use combat skills too. There's so many options in there and yet so many people will level all the way to cap without every knowing the option exists cause it's so poorly presented. I don't even think there's anywhere you can click in the menus to get access to it, just the slash command.

Any recent updates to inventory management? The retainer system is tolerable but the extra dialogue screen when switching between each retainer would drive me crazy when looking for stuff.

They made it a bit better in the expansion. Now when you leave a retainer, you get dropped back into a general retainer menu and can click another there and it goes faster than before, and you don't have to reclick the stupid bell and shit. The main retainer screen also shows slots, money, items currently for sale and venture status, so it's kinda nice. Still not perfect though, would be nice if they unfucked the whole thing a fair bit but I dread to think what sort of backend they're using to make all this shit work off 1.0's carcass.

That sounds way better than before. Do I need to buy the new expac to get that or was it a base game change? I'm 2/3rds of the way through Heavensward so I'm aways off from needing the new expac.

It's a base change, works in old areas, etc. etc. It's one of those QoL things that came with 5.0.

One shot everything up to Titan this week, feels so good having a raid group.

On my off days I help my casual friends do 0-1 chest Savage and the type of literal human garbage you find in PF is astounding even on duty complete.

Well, I got past my crafting block by... not doing ixals anymore. Fuck those ugky mothercluckers in their gaping cloacas with a MOAB. In short I just grinded and leved my way to 50. With that done I am going to just do 1x moogles 1x namazu (eventually again) and 1x deliveries until they are all 80. Doing WVR(74), LTW(58), and GSM(50) first because I want them up for specialist. CRP next so I can finish my goddamn facet quests, etc.

I will either be catching up on some anime and manga soon or getting back into roulettes to level all the other junk to 80.

[Eden savage raids]
  • In comparison to previous savage raids, they reduced the DPS checks by 15% on every floor. They usually reduce the DPS checks for the first raid tier of each expansion by 10%, but they went with 15% this time.

Considering the healer DPS nerfs, makes sense to make the DPS check more forgiving.

Healer damage isn't nerfed though, healer contribution is still around 15-20% depending on group skill. There is this misconception that because healers have less skills now that they somehow contribute less damage than they did before but this is pretty far from the truth.

They nerfed the complexity of the rotation not the total amount of damage.

If anything it makes it easier to contribute more as a healer.

I think that reduce DPS thing is a mistranslation centered around immune to damage/mechanics players hitting boss -> reduce this damage by 10% to account for mechanics = tuning done? Except this time they used 15% rather than 10%. Seems believable if they were testing with drg mnk blm brd, or something.

So I know all of the people on Plebbit are bitching about 5.0 SCH, but this is honestly the first time I've enjoyed playing it. It doesn't feel like I'm constantly struggling to deal with the fairy garbage any more, and they have such a broad healing toolkit for pretty much any situation. Bane would be nice, but that's pretty much all I'm missing.
