Gonna pick this back up and thinking of trying my ps5 controller instead of keyboard/mouse. I’ve never played any mmo with a controller, so does anyone have any advice? Is it any good?
I'm clearing Extreme Trials as Main Tank with no issues with movement or access to abilities, for me it's better than Mouse and Keyboard. I also healed a bunch of Shadowbringers raids.
You have to very carefully set up your keybinds and there'll be annoying things until you get it right.
A few tips:
Turn on legacy movement
Turn on the option to have different action bars when weapon is sheathed/unsheathed
Bind unsheath weapon to L3 (otherwise you'll get stuck in the wrong mode in combat if it's not super easy access)
Bind sprint to R3 (I think you bind a macro to do this)
Have mount/teleport/class change etc on your sheathed setup, you can have multiple bars you cycle through for everything you need out of combat, have the hotbars for this be shared between classes.
You should link 4 hotbars to cross hotbar setup unshared, and 4 to sheathed setup not shared.
Targeting enemy is when I press X, can't remember if I set anything special up for that. Target ally is pressing up and down when you are a healer, you can also press x to lock target so you always default to that party member (eg the tank).
If you move with left stick, it makes it more difficult to use the buttons on the left side while moving, so anything you want to use while moving needs to be on the right side.
L2, R2, L2+R2 and R2+L2 open up 8 action buttons which is 32 total and just enough for most classes. Theres lots of options on how you activate different action buttons including things like L2+L2 and R2+R2 for 16 more.
Try to use the same setups for each class to help with muscle memory. Like I have Taunt on L2+left on every tank, my single target rotation is always on R2+down/left/up, my distance closer is always R2+up etc etc
Put important cooldowns on R2 and L2 hotbars where they are easier to see, combo abilities can be on R2+L2 or L2+R2. Like for Paladin I have Requiscast on R2, but the abilties it then combos into are on R2+L2, so I know to hold L2 after Requiscast to do that combo. For Gunbreaker the 30s cooldown damage buff is on R2 then the other damage cooldowns are on R2+L2, so I know to press L2 to check my 30s and 60s cooldowns after doing the damage up ability. For tanks my 30s cooldown defence ability is on L2 so I can see it and cast it often, but the longer cooldown ones are on L2+R2 which I usually only go to for tank busters or if shit goes wrong.
If a cooldown can't go on L2 or R2, you can have it on both controller cross hotbars and a dummy regular hotbar that's always visible. For example while Sprint is on R3 for me, I have a hotbar with sprint on it visible so I can see when the cooldown is ready. My spint game is insane actually, it's so fast to activate it.
