If you think this is bad you should've seen the ARR official launch week
Omfg it was such a nightmare. It was one of my worst launch experiences ever in a mmo. Really enjoying it since giving it another go. Really going to struggle to finish the story by the launch of the expansion, but oh well.

I lucked out in the fact that on launch day I had just taken off on my two week honeymoon. But it was still fucked up when I came back!

If you skip cut scenes, the main story takes quite some time post 50. I just started it a couple days. I was caught up to March 2014. It took me 6 hours to do the two dungeons, 3 trials and all the running around.

Expansion will most likely be just like it with a little bit less crowding. It will still be a nightmare if you are not in game and stay in game, as queues on the higher servers will be long once again. But once you get in, hardly any problems.

Besides queues on high pop servers, I still assert Ishgard will have the "Sorry too full!" error that Gold Saucer did on day 1. I just can't figure out whether or not Early Access will be a cluster or not, or if it'll basically divide the load into two groups (EA vs Launch).

Will have to see. Should help also that story needs to be completely done to get to ishgard. A lot of the returning players and others won't be able to access it at all(unlike saucer). Also people will be moving in and out of ishguard at a steady pace(questing, leveling etc) where as for golden saucer all the content was inside golden saucer, so once you got in, you didn't leave.

Are there any drawbacks to starting on a low-pop server?
are you here because blizzard gave you a 6 month vacation?

starting on one? i would say doing dungeons maybe idk i have no in game experience on how it works, if its all cross server then no, but if dungeons are your server only i would say maybe that would be the biggest downside is finding a group for leveling content, at 50 i would just transfer wherever high pop you wanted too, that has the most end game raiding guilds, wich is gilg, and transfering over-rides the lock on the server.

Im just starting out myself, if you wanted someone to fool around with i havent picked a server yet but im probably going to tonight and start leveling, throw me a PM if you wanna try and get on the same one, i planned on going arcanist/summoner.

It is more difficult to get static parties for doing the newest content. Other then that it is a boon. Finding 7 other competent people isn't the most difficult thing ever.

The head start weekend is a joke. It is all marketing. That weekend will be a cluster fuck. The fact that they are not releasing the new raids for like 2 weeks won't make a difference. Pretty sure I am busy that weekend and I am excited about that.

I cant remember release price. Expac is only $40. Plenty of places to buy the expac discounted(code sites mainly, like gmg etc).

I did the GMG discount deal at release and it was 22.50 after it, and then only 2.50 because I had 20 in random promotional credit. Good times.

I'm lucky that I normally work during prime time, but even off hours are gonna be shitty on Gilg. Sad times ahead, I think.

I have a coupon for steam that can be used on anything so I will order there when it becomes available.
i was gonna go through steam, but idk whats going on with the xpac and pre-ordering its not available yet.

I dont purchase digitally much(i dont purchase much at all i steal video games) and if i do its usually right from the company, or steam, i know people will probably post codes here but where should i look for them for green man, just check into their site every so often?

I watched the cut scenes. I may have clipped some scenes where I read the text much faster than the voice acting, but generally that's one of the main things I get out of FF, a superior story experience to other MMOs. God knows it's not the combat experience or how my character plays. I think Wildstar has been the only game to really nail that shit in the past few years (at least of the games I've tried).

Generally, I think FF does a great job of introducing content at a relatively quick pace. Even if it's just a new 4 man or trial tied to an assload of cutscenes, they happen frequently enough that the game feels fluid and evolving.

Since rerelease, I'd have to say that FFXIV has delivered substantially more bang for your buck than any other mmo on the market, especially for being a paid service. They've added like 15 4 man dungeons, an entire category of puggagle raid content, all of Coil (actually I forget if 1-3 was available at release or not), 15 8man trials (though to be fair, half of those are other trials with different difficulty) and like 3 progressive tiers of equipment. Not to mention expanded crafting and quest types, the whole roulette system, shitloads of mounts/pets, an entire mini-game platform, etc etc. That's like... Almost two full WoW expansions of content minus overland stuff, in a year and a half, and pretty much every other month, without being an extra box cost. All with probably the highest level of mmorpg graphics on the market right now.

Fanboy off, that's a pretty ridiculous list of shit added for any game.

A very important note about steam. The steam client is its own thing. You cannot play the game without steam if you have the steam version, and you cannot play the normal version via steam(other than adding it manually as an external game thingie). This goes for the expansion as well. If you have the steam version, you need the expansion for the steam version(which I think only steam sells). If you have the normal version, you need the expansion that's not on steam(so everywhere else). Basically Steam is considered a platform, just like PS3 or PS4, so you need to buy your shit correctly.

GMG has preorder codes and shit all the time, they also have VIP offers and what not. Don't really know when they'll have a code that works on heavensward, they might have one right now, I'm too lazy to check.
