The original has a few gruesome bits and is pretty dark overall. It's rare to come across a contemporary film that can be both cheap and hokey yet also serious. Digital cameras and CGI don't do shit for adding weight to a movie. You really need film stock and at least a combination of practical and computer effects.

Recently got on a kick showing old 80s and 90s movies I grew up with to my girlfriend. I realized something similar. A lot of those old movies didn't take themselves too seriously, but still managed to put enough effort into the film for it to be weighty. That combination is really missing these days. You either get some super serious melodramatic bulshit or some mindless low effort swill these days. Nothing in between
