You're right, games that require ongoing costs to maintain should never expect to make money to cover those costs.

Why can't they offer more content for money?

I'm not married to any particular model, but the fact is that if the expectation to pay $400 annually for a B+ shooter, when they are normally $60, there better be some sort of value.

Compare to say DDO that just comes out worth new dungeons/quest packs instead of large expacs, OK, fine. You want the content you can pay for it... OR subscribe. They actually produce value. The llamas in this game are just "pay to skip ahead" gimmicks. It's only mitigated by such sheer randomness that it's unlikely to create a permanent class of "haves" vs the pay-nots and the fact that it's entirely co-op so obvious imbalances don't directly "hurt" the non whale and in many cases can help.

I just don't get why you're up in arms over this but not subscription models.

I spend less on this method so I favor it.

They will be offering more content, developers have been clear and have been very communicative with players on what to expect going forward.

And llamas are as you said, pay to skip ahead. No one is forcing you to buy them, you can move forward without them just fine. Will it take longer? Yeah it will because as you said, you aren't paying to skip forward. Personally I doubt I'll pay more than $100 in transactions going forward. If I need shit made for me that I don't have, I
ll have friends make them for me. -shrug-

Like a WoW subscription? The game that's garbo now?

Also do you know what microtransations are? I don't think you do.

Its not as simple 'pay to skip ahead if you want, no one is forcing you'. Any idiot can see that this has the potential to be a pure fun ass game and any idiot can see that the fun factor has been substantially curbed in order to manipulate people into purchasing micro-transactions. The presence of these gambling mechanics isn't neutral, they've actively diminished the core game play value in service of them.

~5 years I played EQ, I spent $600-$1K on subscriptions... I'll spend $60 (box price) on this... Seems fine?

The difference between an MMO using a sub model where you get a full game vs "the box price doesn't get you everything. How much more do you have to pay? Well that all depends, kiddo" microtransation model.

I love guessing if I'm getting the full game experience without forking out more money!

Since you know what's offered in packs you know full well what you are or aren't getting.

I just disagree that this somehow impacts my core game experience. -shrug- Ravishing hit the nail on the head with how I feel about it too.

RNG loot drops from mobs doesn't seem much different than RNG loot boxes though? It's just a matter of time played before you eventually get what you want. You don't need to spend money to get anything in this game.

Yes but if you could keep putting in $5 for another loot chance on a boss, that would be equivalent and obviously bullshit.

Basically what a Subscription is/was.

Keep in mind that I already said buying loot boxes with cash should be illegal.

I'm just defending that this game does NOT require you to pay money, you can still acquire the same exact loot boxes just by playing. There is no "win" condition, it's just an endless Tower Defense grind, you should look at build/defense strategies more than worrying about the +1 stats.

Not only do most MMORPGs have Subscriptions, they also have MTX. Experience potions/boosts are basically the same exact thing as this game. "pay2skip ahead". There is no "pay2win" when it's all PvE.

"pay2win" mostly applies to PvP where you are at a clear disadvantage against other players that have items you can only purchase with $$

That's not at all what a subscription is.

Which is equivalent to the pay2skip mtx in mmos, so???

None of those reward anything meaningful in the context of player power and they are never offered in a way that preempts content. IE, you can buy 1-100 skip to "catch up" but that's it, you cannot bypass current content or directly purchase loot or loot rolls. It undermines the implicit market agreement Blizzard has with the player base that you must "earn" relevant gear.

I am not against the concept of purchases for items, it is a value proposition. In an FPS they may offer a DLC with new guns and you can only use them if you pay $15. First off, it's not random, everyone is aware of where those items come from. Secondly, the value is not diluted by layers of RNG systems.

Similarly, if you want to offer pure RNG loot crates on cosmetics, then the value may be unsupported, but there is no functional value to those items so who cares as they in no way materially affect the gameplay.
